In quest for creating spaces compatible with the essence of nature and human beings, and using new technologies and innovative, compatible materials, in order to improve the quality of spaces for the man of today and future
My special architectural focus would be on the residential projects, I can say that I run an Architectural Consultancy "Riaz Associates" in Pakistan for 30 years (1984 -2014), in the city of Lahore, one of the most populated city of the country and the capital of the biggest province 'Punjab'.
My interest was on individual housing and the housing schemes projects. My focus was on to design custom homes for the particular clients according to their family requirements, budget with the environment of the location. My primary interest was on a practical, well lighted and a space full of comfort. I attended many juries in different universities in Pakistan.
With my experience and interest in reading magazines, I started publishing an architectural and art magazine (quarterly) "Designers Style" in 2011 as publisher and editor in chief and it is running till today. It is one of the top 3 publications in the country and I am honoured that it has articles from around the world and is sent to many places outside the country. Because of my dual nationality I travelled a lot to many places especially Canada and I moved to Toronto in 2014. I am managing my magazine team from here and to learn more I got admission in Ryerson University, Chang School of Continuing Education in the subject of publishing in 2017. You can visit online at facebook.com/designerstyle.magazine
I moved to Calgary now in Nov.2019, to explore life and style of west of Canada and US.
My focus in Architecture since I got my PhD degree in 2017 has been on multiple fields. My main interest is environmental design and energy efficiency in buildings. This appears greatly in my researches and the courses I teach. I am interested in sustainability and how it can be achieved in both architecture and urban levels.
My focus in architecture as well is interior design. I teach interior design course for senior year where I highlight the interior space planning along with the lighting, furniture, materials, textures, design styles and flooring designs.
I also teach architecture design courses where I teach students the design principles, design considerations and site analysis. How to study the form, mass and void to present an integrated design project.
The design of spaces that represent a preview of the future human behavior, where a balance between environment and technology is the goal to improve architecture and life.
S.M. Shafaiet Mahmud has a passion for innovative ideas, exploring the boundaries of visual art and architecture. He completed his Bachelor of Architecture from American International University Bangladesh (AIUB) in 2017. His B.Arch thesis project, titled “Urban Remediation: Turning Landfill Site into Public Park,” sought to develop an existing landfill into a community urban park, creating a model for turning “negative” zones into vibrant public places. The project questioned the conventional practice of waste management, which has a great impact on the infrastructure of any city. Shafaiet’s proposal included a ward-based waste-processing facility prototype that would recycle waste at the landfill. His proposal was awarded the year’s best thesis and published in Context BD, a reputed online architecture platform.
Shafaiet has worked as an intern architect at Volumezero Architects. In 2018, he was awarded the design competition “Inhabiting Nature,” organized by Aditya College of Architecture (ACA), Mumbai, India. He attended the Institute of Architects Bangladesh architecture jamboree in 2016. His expertise is in complex geometry and coding in Rhinoceros and Grasshopper. He participated in EVOLO skyscraper design competition in 2015 and attended a workshop arranged by Habitat for Humanity Bangladesh called “Safe Sanitation 2014.” In this workshop, he was awarded 2nd prize for his “Community Toilet Design.”
At Ci+AU, he is currently working on the design of eight BRAC regional offices and a prototype pavilion for Aarong Earth, the display and sale space for Aarong’s herbal products. He is an associate member of the Institute of Architects Bangladesh.
