Abhishek Rao is a budding urbanist, licensed architect, noted artist, illustrator and the founder of Abhishek Rao Studio, a transdisciplinary creative unit. He has pursued architecture, planning & design. He also holds a ‘Visharad’ in fine arts and a diploma in Information Technology. He is the winner of WASA Genius Architect Medal 2021 for securing highest overall score in the world. Abhishek also bagged WASA Genius Building Award 2021 & WASA One Percent Award 2021 at Japan. Currently he is a practicing architect & academician. Abhishek got associated with AIA since 2021, after he graduated in architecture under mentorship of Architect. Simon Wells. With an intrinsic affinity towards sustainable design development and landscape architecture, he emphasizes on ecology restoration in his works by incorporating green ethos and technological amalgamations. Abhishek Rao has won several competitions of national & international repute and academic awards in the field of art and architecture. He had been an International Student member of American Society of Landscape Architects under the mentorship of Ar. Ming-Jen Hsueh, Sasaki Associates. Being an artist it always fascinates him how the entire world of art merges with the minute domains of architecture. To find the link, to perceive a salient career with best professional ethics with dedicated efforts and to associate to grow tremendously has been his primary motto.

I think a good design whether its an architectural or urban planning scale all the way down to product design, the underlying principle is to make things better for people. I think the motive should be to use design to enable people to live better lifes, to get more out of everything. Its a goal quite often can be lost in architectural design and for this one must under the human conditions cultural differences around the world, the climatic sitiations that people are in and more and more its about trying to embrace all aspects of health. So I think in all aspects if you allow yourself to think about health, think about the wellbeing of the people we are designing for - it can finally lead us into some interesting and new strategies for where technology should go. There is a responsibility to think about people in a broader sense. Young people eventually become old people, firm people become infirm. so there is a constant need to think about all at the same time to make the world a happy place to be for all.

According to me - 'Teaching, is a continuous learning process!'Teaching happened to me by chance early in my career, but the satisfaction that came with it made me take it up as my full time career. I have been part of Faculty of Architecture, Dr.M.G.R Educational and Research Institute, Chennai, INDIA., since 2011. I have approached my design studios in collaborative, exploratory, experimental and interdisciplinary ways. Participation in national & international competitions has been a regular activity for my students to constantly understand where they stand among their peers globally as well as nationally. Spatial design responsive to senses and responsible to environment has been my guiding design philosophy. I am currently pursuing my doctoral research in Architectural Pedagogy. My other interests are Learning spaces, Vernacular interiors, Sustainable interiors, etc. Students under my guidance have won 3 international awards (Organised by AIA Austin, Appio Spagnolo), 3 national awards (DDA, Ethosempowers) & 2 national short listing (Council of Architecture India, AYDA Nippon).
