The project is located in Kashitu, Zambia, in Central Africa. In rural Zambia, students leaving elementary school have limited opportunities to continue their education at the secondary level, so the local government initiated this project to provide further education for local children.
The school is a boarding school where students will receive both academic and practical education. In accordance with the requirements of the project and the necessary infrastructure of the school, the area is divided into three zones: the teaching area, the sports area and the living area. There are eight classrooms, three laboratories (physics, biology and chemistry), two workshops, teachers' offices, a library, a conference room, an indoor sports field, a basketball court, recreational area for students, agriculture, a cafeteria, a hospital and dormitory buildings for men and women.
The school campus designed for Kashitu in Zambia needs to be integrated with local African culture, climate, resources and educational needs. Zambia has a tropical savanna climate with distinct dry and wet seasons. It is necessary to reduce indoor temperature and dependence on air conditioning through building layout, sunshade structure and natural ventilation design. The campus is not only a place for teaching, but also a community activity center, such as setting up an outdoor entertainment plaza to enhance the interaction between the school and the local community.
The building utilizes the cheapest local bamboo and brick as the main building materials, and creates appropriate spaces that meet the functional needs of the users in a simple way.
