Project idea

Cricket has been a vital part of our culture for generations, becoming the most popular sport across all age groups in Bangladesh. With its immense popularity at an all-time high, Bangladesh has the potential to promote sports tourism by hosting major international tournaments. However, this has been hindered by a lack of world-class sports infrastructure. To address this, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) initiated the construction of a state-of-the-art stadium in Purbachal. Spanning 38 acres, the stadium is strategically located at the gateway of Purbachal Sector 01, adjacent to the MRT Line 01 Purbachal Station and the Balu River
The stadium’s design reflects a sophisticated blend of sustainability, functionality, and aesthetics, creating multipurpose spaces for both athletes and fans. It prioritizes sustainable development, fan engagement, and innovative design, catering not only to sporting events but also to concerts, conventions, and community gatherings.
The goal is to break away from traditional stadium designs by embracing a contemporary, parametric design approach, moving beyond the "Form Follows Function" concept. A key feature is the introduction of an entrance plaza and a central plaza to foster community engagement on a daily basis. Additionally, an elevated sports boulevard has been incorporated to connect the stadium seamlessly with the surrounding sports complex, enhancing accessibility and flow.

Project description

The goal of this Thesis is to promote sports and athleticism among the young generations. By designing a contemporary-style stadium, while moving away from the traditional style stadiums. Rejecting the idea of “Form Follows Function” for a stadium and going for a parametric design approach. As for the architectural part the main goal is to make a monumental structure that will act as a sculpture at the gateway of Purbachal. A Structure so iconic that is bound to catch the eyes of anyone who passes by it. A stadium so monumental that can inspire one to become an athlete and achieve their dreams. The next goal to achieve will be building a stadium that is multi-functional, where the fans are able to experience a wide array of services and offerings that they will enjoy. Thus, not only serving the sports function but also serving as a community hub for the surrounding neighborhood. Also making sure that the fan experience is the finest by providing their required amenities. Lastly, another important goal would be to solve the traffic congestion during the matchday which we have observed in our existing stadiums, where entire areas are blocked off in order to maintain the traffic.

Technical information

The construction of the building is made up of concrete slab and steel trusses and polycarbonate sheets along with steel columns. While the louvers on the outer facade is made from corugated steel sheet. . Making it easier to get the desired shape for parametric design.
