Project idea

The idea of this project is to address the loss of sense of place in the Pancoran Glodok area due to modernization and commercialization, by revitalizing its physical character, architectural identity, historical and cultural significance, and community interactions. This is achieved through the strategic integration of city image elements, including the restoration of traditional shophouse façades, activation of key public nodes, improvement of pedestrian pathways, and the enhancement of cultural landmarks, ensuring a sustainable and inclusive urban environment that reconnects the community with its heritage.

Project description

This project focuses on revitalizing the Pancoran Glodok area by restoring its sense of place through the integration of open spaces, infrastructure innovation, and the preservation of cultural landmarks, ensuring sustainability, inclusivity, and enhanced social interaction while serving as a model for future revitalization efforts. The design approach incorporates city image elements, including district reorganization, activation of key nodes, enhancement of pedestrian-friendly edges, seamless path connectivity, and the reinforcement of significant landmarks to create a cohesive urban identity that reflects the area's historical and cultural essence.

Technical information

The revitalization of the Pancoran Glodok area focuses on restoring its sense of place through city image elements, ensuring the preservation of its cultural and historical identity. The district is enhanced by reorganizing the shophouse façades through a visual analysis to identify key architectural elements such as roofs, windows, and doors, ensuring that significant design features are retained. Nodes serve as focal points for community activities and are distributed across four key locations: Jalan Pancoran, an Art Gallery in front of Pasar Glodok, a plaza near Gang Gloria, and an Amphitheater in front of Pancoran Chinatown Point. Edges are defined by five footways, functioning as pedestrian pathways that separate public and private spaces while providing shade and supporting various user activities. The path system is designed for continuity, integrating with existing facilities and featuring a level surface between pedestrian and vehicular lanes, allowing the street to transform into a multifunctional space when closed to traffic at night. Lastly, the landmark is represented by a redesigned entrance gate with a minimalist aesthetic and a dominant red color, reinforcing the identity of Pancoran Glodok, complemented by an Art Gallery that serves as a central hub for history enthusiasts and cultural communities.
