Project idea

The project aims to transform an industrial brownfield site in Brněnec into a memorial and cultural hub, emphasizing the story of Schindler’s Ark. Leveraging its rich historical and cultural heritage, the site will offer an inclusive, multi-lingual, and accessible experience for diverse visitors. Key strengths include its internationally renowned story and strategic location, which will help attract global attention and boost local tourism. The project will address current weaknesses by enhancing site connectivity and revitalizing the riverfront, creating a valuable outdoor space. Opportunities include fostering economic growth through tourism and providing educational experiences on human rights and history. To mitigate threats, the design will ensure active engagement with both visitors and the local community, offering varied expositions and spaces for reflection and cultural events.

Project description

The Brněnec Memorial and Cultural Hub, located at the historical site of Schindler’s factory, aims to preserve and present the rich historical and cultural heritage of the area. This inclusive space is designed to be accessible to all, offering multi-lingual exhibits and facilities for people with disabilities. The memorial serves not only as a reminder of the past horrors of the Holocaust but also as a place for reflection on contemporary issues of human rights and morality. The site is easily accessible by rail and road, making it a convenient destination for tourists and educational trips.

Technical information

Buildings of lesser value are demolished to create space for valuable outdoor areas, and new bridges and paths are built to connect to other parts of the town, with most usage planned in existing and renewed structures. Most of the remaining structure is neglected or damaged, requiring a complex structural survey to determine necessary stabilization measures. Proposed measures include new hydro insulation and drainage systems to prevent moisture and mold, new roofs for protection from precipitation, and replacing beams that can no longer bear weight. To preserve the original facade, thermal insulation will be added only to the renewed roof. Lightweight lime screed will even all floors, preventing mold and other damage. Windows will be renewed to their original industrial appearance, with contemporary replacements for non-original windows and blinds installed in darker exposition areas. Preserved historical doors and facades will be restored and painted with the original yellowish-white whitewash.
