Reuse the Tower — Torre Rinalda

Project idea

The Tower is Located in the territory of Lecce, is a remarkable example of this architectural defensive appara-tus. It was constructed during the l 6th century, with local limestone, the tower has a square base of over 10 meters on each side and a sloped body. The Landscape is breathtaking with rocks rising from the ocean and a quaint sand hill nestled behind it.

Project description

The intervention was carried out on two different scales, M Scale & S Scale.

*M_Scale.
In order to preserve the tower from erosion and maintain its integrity, we should also consider developing the surrounding area into a tourist destination.
Since The landscape is characterized by rocks rising from the ocean, with a sand hill nestled behind it.
We took proactive measures to prevent seawater erosion by constructing small dams that interconnect the rocks, resulting in the creation of a natural pool in front of the tower.
By utilizing the sandhill situated behind the tower, we have managed to incorporate underground services, baths and locker rooms.
The pathway connecting the three main components exudes a sense of weightlessness as it consists of wooden panels that seem to float over the sand and water.

Technical information

*S_ Scale.
In order to maintain The integrity of the old structure and the natural growth on its stones, Which created a sense of unity between the tower and its surrounding landscape.
The intervention on the tower was minimal.
The COR-TEN material gave the impression that it had melted and assimilated into the Tower, resembling the way in which nature is gradually taking over the structure.
The COR-TEN floating floors and stairs are Designed to support natural growth without causing any interruptions or harm.
We created an experience through the different light exposures and the transitions between the walls of the Tow-er. The experience we wanted to give the users was an experience of an enigma. In which they enter the Ground Level which is very dark and mysterious.
As they ascend the stairs, they are exposed to the outdoor area that has The ocean and the surrounding scenery offering a breathtaking view. When inside the upper level of the tower, its natural to feel like you're in a dream. The outside world may seem blurry and distorted. But don't worry, its all part of the experience. Just take your time and embrace the details of the Tower.
