Project idea

The idea behind the Prehensia Airport and Aerotropolis project stems from the need to revolutionize traditional airport infrastructure by integrating suborbital flight capabilities and emphasizing sustainable urban development. Inspired by the local context of Makhachkala and its seismic challenges, the project aims to enhance urban connectivity while minimizing environmental impact through innovative design solutions.

Project description

This ambitious project encompasses a cutting-edge airport facility and surrounding aerotropolis located strategically on the Caspian Sea near Makhachkala, Dagestan. The airport’s distinctive wavelike structure not only ensures resilience against seismic activities and strong winds but also fosters a seamless passenger experience through intuitive navigation and ergonomic design. Designed to accommodate both traditional aircraft and rockets for suborbital flights, the airport offers unprecedented global connectivity with reduced environmental footprint.

Situated 30 kilometers offshore, the Prehensia Airport mitigates noise pollution in urban areas while optimizing aircraft takeoff conditions with favorable sea winds. Access to the airport is facilitated by a Hyperloop system, providing rapid connectivity to the mainland in just 3.5 minutes. This design choice not only enhances convenience for travelers but also integrates global amenities such as Starbucks and McDonald’s with local architectural elements, creating a glocal environment that celebrates regional identity alongside international standards.

The aerotropolis concept extends beyond the airport itself, incorporating residential areas, offices, and adaptable zones that cater to evolving urban needs. This modular approach ensures scalability and future readiness, allowing the aerotropolis to grow organically while maintaining efficiency and aesthetic appeal. By merging functional efficiency with aesthetic innovation, the Prehensia Airport and Aerotropolis project sets a new benchmark in airport design and sustainable urban development, showcasing how global connectivity can harmoniously coexist with local heritage and environmental stewardship.

Technical information

1. Structural Design: The airport’s wavelike structure is engineered to withstand seismic activity and strong winds prevalent in the Caspian Sea region. Its aerodynamic shape not only reduces wind load but also disperses seismic energy, ensuring stability and safety during adverse conditions.
2. Location and Accessibility: Positioned 30 kilometers offshore near Makhachkala, the airport minimizes noise pollution and urban impact. Access to the mainland is facilitated by a Hyperloop system, offering rapid transit in just 3.5 minutes, enhancing connectivity without environmental disruption.
3. Operational Capabilities: Prehensia Airport supports both traditional aircraft and rockets for suborbital flights. Rockets enable ultra-fast travel times, such as a 34-minute journey from London to Hong Kong, redefining global transportation possibilities.
4. Urban Integration: The aerotropolis concept integrates residential, commercial, and recreational spaces around the airport. This holistic approach fosters a self-sustaining urban environment where residents, travelers, and businesses thrive in proximity to efficient transportation networks.
5. Sustainability Features: Emphasizing sustainability, the airport’s design includes energy-efficient systems and environmentally friendly materials. The offshore location and noise-reducing measures further minimize ecological footprint, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable development.
6. Modular Expansion: Designed with a modular framework, Prehensia Airport can expand and adapt to future demands seamlessly. Adaptable zones within the aerotropolis allow for flexible development, accommodating evolving technologies and urban planning needs.
7. User Experience: Central to its design philosophy is enhancing passenger and community experience. The intuitive layout and integration of global and local amenities ensure convenience and cultural relevance, reflecting a glocal approach that resonates with diverse stakeholders.
