Project idea

In our fast-paced contemporary world, stress has become a pervasive issue, particularly among university students. Research indicates that severe stress arises from various sources, including academic pressures, financial burdens, and social and economic challenges. Malabe, a rapidly developing academic hub, hosts a significant population of university students. It is essential to address their well-being and assist them in achieving a flourishing state rather than succumbing to overwhelming stress.

The Creative Music Retreat is an innovative solution that harnesses the therapeutic power of music to alleviate stress and foster well-being among students. This project aims to create a nurturing environment where students can unwind, reconnect with their inner selves, and build strong social networks. By integrating architectural elements that promote relaxation and community, the retreat offers a holistic approach to mental health and personal growth.

Our ultimate goal is to transform Malabe into a city that not only accommodates its vibrant student population but also actively supports their well-being. The Creative Music Retreat aspires to create a symbiotic relationship between students and the community, enhancing the overall quality of life in Malabe and setting a precedent for student-centric urban development.

Project description

The Creative Music Retreat comprises several key components designed to create an accessible, safe, and aesthetically pleasing environment that promotes meaningful connections and supports overall student well-being. The retreat offers a pioneering approach, harnessing the power of music to effectively reduce stress and aid students in achieving a flourishing state. The retreat consists of two distinct units: the Social Hub and the Restorative Hub.

SOCIAL HUB:
-Interactive Plaza:
An open space that invites social interaction, community engagement, and public gatherings.
Architecturally designed to be the heart of the social hub, with wide pathways, seating areas, and landscaped elements to encourage people to gather and interact.

-Café and Lounge Areas:
Comfortable, informal spaces for relaxation and socializing.
Designed with cozy seating, ambient lighting, and natural decor to create an inviting atmosphere.
Integration of indoor and outdoor spaces to blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment.

-Amphitheatre:
An outdoor venue for public performances, dialogues, and events.
Constructed with natural materials and acoustic considerations to enhance sound quality.
Terraced seating and a covered stage provide a versatile space for various events.

-Group Music Activities:
Dedicated spaces where students can come together to perform, enjoy, and appreciate music as a group.
Soundproofed rooms and outdoor areas equipped with musical instruments and technology to facilitate group music sessions.
Designed to foster a sense of belonging and community through shared musical experiences.

RESTORATIVE HUB

-Restorative Music Hall:
A multipurpose space for music therapy sessions, concerts, and other activities that provide emotional and physical relief from stress.
Features high-quality acoustics, flexible seating arrangements, and calming decor.
Incorporates natural light and views of the surrounding landscape to enhance the restorative experience.

-Therapy Unit:
Includes individual pods and group therapy rooms for counseling, coaching, and emotional support services.
Designed with privacy and comfort in mind, using soundproofing, soft lighting, and comfortable furnishings.
Therapy pods are small, enclosed spaces that provide a quiet and safe environment for personal reflection and healing.

Sunset Lounge:
A serene space offering views of the sunset, designed to promote reflection and relaxation.
Features comfortable seating, warm lighting, and an unobstructed view of the horizon.
The lounge is positioned to capture the best views and create a tranquil atmosphere.

Contemplative Music Spaces:
Spaces for the contemplation of music in a natural setting, enhancing the therapeutic effects of the environment.
Includes outdoor gardens, walking paths, and quiet alcoves where students can listen to or play music.
Designed with natural materials, water features, and native plants to create a peaceful and harmonious setting.

By integrating these components, the Creative Music Retreat aims to create a holistic environment that supports the mental, emotional, and social well-being of students, helping them to thrive academically and personally. The architectural design emphasizes harmony with the natural environment, sustainability, and the creation of spaces that foster community and personal growth.

Technical information

The consideration of environmental, acoustic, and aesthetic factors aims to create a therapeutic and sustainable space. Key technical specifications include:

Site and Environmental Integration:
The project is located approximately 1 km from major universities and the town center, accessible by walking or cycling, thus reducing the carbon footprint. The site is identified as a 'low-lying development zone,' enabling wise use of the wetland to enhance microclimate and habitat.

Building Design:
-Social Hub: Multi-level areas with extended eaves and double-height spaces enhance social interaction and create a comfortable microclimate.
-Restorative Hub: Includes therapy units, individual pods, and a sunset lounge designed to provide a calming and restorative environment.

Material Selection:
-Sustainable materials: Use of local materials such as wire-cut bricks for load-bearing walls, Durra Eco Form for non-load-bearing partitions, and reused precast concrete for flooring.
-Acoustic Considerations: Performing pods and halls are equipped with Durra Eco Form ceilings and fabric layering to absorb sound and reduce noise.
-Structural Design: The bridge is constructed using steel trusses, providing durability and the ability to span large distances with minimal environmental impact.

Passive Cooling and Ventilation:
The building orientation and design incorporate passive cooling strategies such as extended eaves, courtyards, and water bodies to maintain a comfortable atmosphere throughout the year. Trees and water bodies act as natural buffers against noise and pollution, enhancing the overall tranquillity of the site.

The comprehensive design of the Creative Music Retreat not only addresses the immediate needs of student well-being but also sets an example of sustainable and sensitive site development, intertwining with the natural environment and fostering a strong community spirit.
