Project idea

The design aims at both remembrance, education and spiritual comfort.
In the design, the original buildings were preserved as much as possible without destroying the site and environment with historical memory. We hope that the overall design of this memorial site can create a solemn and warm atmosphere. Both commemorative and daily, both to provide services for tourists who come to this place, while meeting the daily needs of local residents.

Project description

This project mainly comprises four parts: Schindler's Ark Building, the German garrison building, Oskar and Emily Schindler's office building, and the area of the former camp. In terms of architectural function, the Schindler's Ark Building is segmented into the War History Exhibition Hall, Spinning Mill Historical Exhibition Hall, Interactive Image Space & Office Spaces, Resident Leisure Area, and the Central Courtyard Zone. The German garrison building primarily serves as the European History Exhibition Hall. Oskar and Emily Schindler's office building primarily comprises the Plaza Ancillary Area. Lastly, the area of the former camp is primarily designated as the Interactive Water Feature Zone.

Technical information

This project adopts a passive energy-saving strategy known as the "Windcatcher Effect." The central courtyard of Schindler's Ark Building is particularly advantageous in this regard, as one section of it is heated by direct, angled sunlight, while the remaining portions remain cool due to the shadows cast by adjacent walls. This temperature differential enhances the chimney effect, which facilitates the rise of hot air. By harnessing this phenomenon, they direct wind into the building, creating airflows and fostering a comfortable environment from an architectural perspective.
