Project idea

The main idea behind the kyrenia Aquatic Centre is to create an "Urban courtyard " between buildings and with the use of sky bridges linking the buildings from different levels creating semi-open spaces underneath the bridges at thesame time creating shaded niches for the people enjoying the water activities. The design of the Aquatic Centre includes a landscaping filled with water elements flowing throughout the site from the various levels creating the sense of movement fluidity and relaxation to the users. The aquatic center’s main building features a distinctive perforated bubble-like double skin facade, providing a visual representation of its aquatic function enhancing the architectural identity and functionality of the complex. This facade mimics the appearance of bubbles, symbolizing water and creating a visually striking exterior as well as the interior spaces

Project description

This project consists of two main buildings, one of them which serves as competition pool area, with an Olympic-sized swimming pool with designated areas for laps, recreational swimming, and aquatic fitness classes, spectators sitting areas and changing rooms underneath. Firstly, on ground floor level of this main building we have a welcoming lobby together with aquariums exhibitions. On the first floor we have a restaurant with a gallery at the center looking down to the aquariums exhibition. Another building embodies recreational pools, fitness and wellness center, service spaces on the ground floor and at the roof top we have a leisure pool. In order to define this recreational outdoor space we created bridges connecting the buildings together and with the help of the shear walls protruding from the basement and ground floor we were able to provide support for this bridges while creating niches for the users of the roof top pool.

Technical information

The proposed Aquatic Center is a modern facility designed to accommodate various aquatic sports and recreational activities. For the main building, the ground floor is constructed using a composite steel structure, providing robust support and flexibility. The columns were strategically placed to minimize interior obstructions and support upper floors . The first floor houses the competition pool, supported by steel trusses, ensuring a spacious and unobstructed layout.
For the other building containing the leisure pools and ancillary spaces, the ground floor is constructed using a composite steel structure, and shear walls ensuring strength and flexibility. The roof top of this building has an elevated pool also with sky bridges connecting to the adjacent buildings supported by shear walls protruding from the basement and ground floor. These elements create shaded niches underneath for visitors to relax while enjoying the rooftop pool.
The aquatic center’s main building features a distinctive perforated bubble-like double skin facade, providing a visual representation of its aquatic function. Its adjacent building with the leisure pools as part of the same complex, utilizes a polycarbonate double skin facade to create a sense of transparency and lightness. Together, these design elements enhance the architectural identity and functionality of the complex.
