Project idea

The Convention Centre in Khulna, Bangladesh, draws inspiration from the city's deep-rooted dependence on the shrimp industry. The architecture symbolizes the economic significance of shrimp farming, using a shrimp shell-inspired form to reflect its cultural and economic importance. This iconic design aims to evoke curiosity about Khulna's history and celebrate its maritime heritage through architectural symbolism.

The primary goal is to showcase the uniqueness of Khulna's economic backbone—shrimp farming—through innovative architecture. By educating visitors about the shrimp industry's impact on the region, the project aims to foster appreciation for local industries and stimulate tourism. It serves as a dual-purpose venue: a source of pride for the local community and a compelling attraction for global tourists interested in cultural narratives.

The architecture caters to both local residents and international visitors. For locals, it serves as a testament to their cultural and economic history, encapsulating their journey from traditional fishing communities to modern shrimp farming. Globally, The Convention Centre becomes a landmark celebrating Khulna's unique identity, drawing tourists intrigued by its architectural beauty and historical narrative.

The design of the convention Centre seamlessly integrates with Khulna's cultural and environmental landscape. Sustainability is a core principle, with the use of locally sourced materials and energy-efficient technologies. The architecture not only celebrates Khulna's cultural heritage but also promotes environmental stewardship, aligning with global sustainability goals.

Technical information

The construction of The Convention Centre emphasizes sustainability. It utilizes sustainable materials, including lightweight Glass fiber for the exterior shell, inspired by innovative projects like those by Zaha Hadid. Energy-efficient systems and green building practices ensure minimal environmental impact while maximizing operational efficiency.

The main structure employs a Truss Shell design for the exterior, supported by a metal column and beam structure internally. The lightweight Glass fiber shell transfers loads efficiently to the ground, connecting seamlessly with columns that extend into the basement levels. Innovative construction techniques, such as embedment of steel columns within concrete columns, ensure structural integrity and stability.

The Convention Centre represents more than just a venue; it embodies Khulna's journey from a fishing community to a global hub for shrimp farming. By integrating cultural heritage with innovative architecture, this project aims to inspire, educate, and unite communities while promoting sustainable development practices. It stands as a beacon of Khulna's past, present, and future—a testament to resilience, cultural richness, and economic vitality. The Convention Centre, highlighting its significance as a cultural landmark and economic driver for Khulna, Bangladesh.
