Project description

The objectives of Contemporary Architectural Design Studio are to develop design skill and creative abilities among the students by exercising the building system including structural, plumbing, electrical, firefighting in relation with the architectural spaces and their uses. he studio focuses on contemporary design ideas in order to solve the complexity of multi-storied and multi-functional building and the application of design considerations under various physical settings and climatic situations. To introduce the integration of building systems and basic building services in architectural design, the studio will exercise a multifunctional commercial building design e.g. shopping complex where students will explore public spaces as the social place of interaction.
Commercialization was the most important foundation of ancient economy that led to the center of consumption. As a result the majority of urban marketplaces were located in the most significant areas, such as the public squares known as the agora in the Greek and Hellenistic eras and the forum in the Roman Empire, which served as the city's political, religious, and economic hubs (Hardach & Schilling, 1988). Nowadays, shopping mall as a worldwide phenomenon that is developing quickly. The attachment of people towards shopping centers is propelled by the changes of lifestyle, pattern of motorized transportationand intensive activities in shopping centers. A shopping center is defined as a group of commercial structures with integrated architecture, which is built in a planned location, developed, owned and managed as an operational unit (Kowinski, 2002).The management of physical and social facilities in shopping center can influence the enhancement of the functional values and create a sense of place and ntense social relationships among visitor Yusuf, 2012). The development of today’s shopping center is no longer merely a functional purpose, yet, it becomes amore experiential one. Recent shopping centers have more complex
functions compared to the previous ones (Kusumowidagdo, et al, 2013).
