Project idea

The main Idea behind the Girne Aquatic Centre is to create a new "Urban corridor" in-between two buildings to link who different parts of the city through which users can pass, consuming less time and enjoying the semi-opened space, a "paradise" in the middle of city. Design of an Aquatic Centre draws inspiration from the dynamic and powerful imagery of crashing waves. This central concept embodies both the fluidity and the force of water, creating a space that captures the essence of movement and energy, while offering tranquility and relaxation.

Project description

Project consists of two buildings, one of them (from East) serves as competition pool area, spectators, restaurant on ground floor, gym and spa on first floor. Another building (from West) embodies recreational pools, main lobby, service spaces on the ground floor and administrative area on first floor and bacement parking connected with main lobby. Both pool spaces are placed further from main road that ensures privacy. Due to the hot North Cyprus climate we have created a semi-opened space inbetween buildings which contains water and vegetation elements so as summer breeze passes through water cools air down creating very comfortable atmosphere. The roof which is space frame structure provides long span and shaped in a curve that gives perfect angle for solar panels which will serve all the building generate as much energy as possible. The roof and exterior walls amd columns are made of light coloured materials to minimize affection of the sun on a building. Permeable pavements, water filtering systems are applied as to manage racing water, as to use cleaned pool water for irrigation of landscape around the project in which we have used only native drought resistant plants.

Technical information

Roof is made by space frame structure that drops in some points and gets supported by massive RC columns that connect to the foundation. For the rest of the project the roof is supported by share walls that work as path defining elements especially for main lobby of a west building. For the facade we used inclined inwards spider glass that gets supported by the cables for extra support. There is a suspended ceiling covered by ceramic tiles that easy to clean, space inside of it is used for electrical, HVAC and piping systems. Roof is covered by light coloured alluminium panels.
