Project idea

Modification of the Central jail area by analyzing context, history, character of the settlement, user expectations, and the city's contemporary context. The appearance of the routes can be improved, thereby improving pedestrian and vehicular movement. Relocation of the Central Jail paved the way for open space and a park. This even created an opportunity to provide recreational facilities and public services, such as a museum. This will depict the historical timeline of the place and the story of the prisoners' jail life. Nodes connected to the heritage sites are considered the most complex form. If the central jail area is opened as public space, then it can be the central node to accessibly ensuring breathing space in Sylhet, which is becoming extinct due to urbanization, the distance between city residents and nature has increased. Urban greenery is the only way to bridge this gap between people and nature.

Project description

The project delves into the intricate anatomical relationship between the cityscape, architecture, and culture of Sylhet, a region deeply intertwined with the history of its inhabitants. It seeks to unravel the historical narrative of old Sylhetians while examining the evolving human activities and contemporary needs shaping its urban fabric. By understanding the symbiotic connection between the built environment and cultural dynamics, the project aims to inform the design of spaces that embody the essence of this unique locale. At its core, the exploration encompasses the essence of Sylhet's urban identity and the rich cultural heritage passed down through generations. By excavating layers of history, traditions, and societal norms, the project seeks to unearth the underlying spirit of the place, enabling a deeper comprehension of its spatial needs and architectural manifestations. Through rigorous analysis and synthesis, the project endeavors to envision a contemporary architecture that resonates with the ethos of Sylhet. This entails not only a functional approach to urban planning but also a profound respect for the intangible heritage ingrained within the city's fabric. By bridging the past with the present, the aim is to craft spaces that honor tradition while accommodating the evolving aspirations of its inhabitants. Ultimately, the project serves as a catalyst for re-imagining Sylhet's built environment in alignment with its cultural legacy and contemporary exigencies. It seeks to foster a dialogue between tradition and innovation, fostering a sustainable urban future that cherishes the values passed down from generation to generation.
