The term Early Childhood Development Centers (ECDC) was introduced to pre-schools for the first time by the National Policy ( 2004) with a view to change the attitudes towards pre-schools which were considered as miniature schools teaching children (Reading Writing and Arithmetic) into child friendly institutions that cater to holistic development emphasizing psychosocial development . The current Issues regarding the Early childhood Development in the Country is depicted below.
• Issues Related to Preschool and the Preschool Teacher – Majority of the preschool teachers lack knowledge on age-specific guidance and lack ECCD training. Diploma holders have difficulty in practicing their conceptual knowledge. They lack guiding skills. There are no resource centers for preschool teachers to learn (even a library with ECCD material) and for parents (especially mothers) to make use of while they wait near the preschool waiting for their children.
• Unequal distribution of resources – Among the preschools by both the government and the non-government organizations is observed to be a problem yet to be solved.
• Provision conflicts – Preschools and daycare centers are conducted/housed in one place. There were no separate rooms for age-specific guidance in most of the preschools.
• Issues Related to Society - Many ECDC lack the required standards. There was no responsible institution for preschool registration and there was no institution directly responsible for ECCD (lack of owner/duty bearer).
• Issues Related to Parents - Poor lack of knowledge about early childhood development
• Lack of a standard national Curriculum - Diversity of Learning volumes results in discriminations
• Preschools are highly commercialized – A majority of preschool teachers cannot recognize children with special needs. A vast majority of them have not got any training on how to guide or handle children with special needs
