The Goulette in Tunisia is a charming coastal town on the Gulf of Tunis. Its rich maritime heritage dates back centuries, influenced by civilizations like the Phoenicians and Ottomans. The iconic Kasbah, a fortress from the 16th century, offers panoramic views and houses a maritime history museum. The lively waterfront bustles with cafes, restaurants, and shops, perfect for strolling and enjoying the Mediterranean views. The fishing port showcases fresh catches and local seafood delicacies. Sandy beaches invite visitors to swim, sunbathe, and partake in water sports. The town’s diverse dining scene features Tunisian and international cuisines. The Goulette is a gateway to explore Tunis and the UNESCO-listed ruins of Carthage. This coastal gem combines history, natural beauty, and culinary delights for an unforgettable experience.
The project emerged in response to a requisition of the city of the Goulette, calling for an architectural endeavor. Subsequently, a site was carefully chosen from the newly developed urban plan, serving as the canvas for this transformative project. The envisioned design aims to elevate the cityscape, bringing forth a striking architectural presence that captivates the senses. Through meticulous planning and visionary thinking, this project aspires to create an iconic landmark that embodies the spirit of the Goulette while harmonizing with its urban fabric. With its verticality and innovative design elements, the project promises to reshape the skyline, leaving an indelible mark on the city’s architectural legacy.
In embracing this undertaking, the project seeks to contribute to the growth, identity, and allure of La Goulette for generations to come.
“The square as a geometric shape is ideal and perfect. This form reflects the religion and the purity of Islam. Inspired by the idea of detachment from the material world, a detachment from the earthly realm towards a world of peace and spirituality. Even in the earliest mosques, the building’s form is based on squares, where everything is equal, just as we are equal before God. The mosque will fulfill the traditional role of a mosque, serving as a place of spirituality and a gathering place for the community.”
The proposed program for the mosque includes three levels. It consists of two prayer levels, one for men and one for women, along with a separate level for a library and a children’s school. The basement floors provide parking and a multipurpose space. The main entrance features a central courtyard, and the mosque aims to cater to the spiritual and educational needs of the community.
Facade Design: The project utilizes Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) extensively throughout all the facades, providing a durable and visually appealing architectural solution.
HPL Panels: High-Pressure Laminate (HPL) panels are incorporated into the design, offering versatility and aesthetic options for different parts of the project's exterior.
Sustainable Design: The project embraces sustainable principles, incorporating features such as energy-efficient systems, passive design strategies, and the utilization of natural ventilation and daylighting to minimize energy consumption.
Natural Openings: The design prioritizes the integration of natural openings, such as windows and skylights, to maximize the utilization of natural light and airflow, enhancing the comfort and well-being of the occupants while reducing reliance on artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation.
These revised technical details highlight the utilization of GFRC and HPL panels for the facade, the sustainable design approach focusing on natural openings and energy efficiency, as well as the environmentally conscious construction methods. Further specific details and specifications can be developed during the project's design and construction phases to ensure the successful implementation of these technical considerations.
