Project idea

Yekaterinburg is famous for its diverse tram system and picturesque street art. It is considered the 'Russian Capital of Street Art'. That tram grid is some sort of an art, which creates 'order' out of 'chaos'. We decided to make a space, that will be able to represent to the citizens this interaction of 'peace' and 'chaos' and a result the 'birth' of magnificent art. We (people of Yekaterinburg) are becoming a some sort of a connection between previous industrial and future post-industrial life. We created three different levels. Each one of them represents one of the three main terms: 'chaos', 'art', 'peace'. Only 'working' side by side they are able to provide a beneficial space. Like we have to combine past (tram lines) with the future (CCPA) to create the welcoming present.

Project description

Concept: public building that includes several functions: transport hub, art gallery and green space for physical exercises, social interactions, relaxation and mental restoration. The building was established to create an environment that fulfills characteristics, which are missing or in deficit ones. As the result levels, that have various features and purposes, are being formed.

Level 'Peace' is located on the green roof. Main function – recreation space. Level size – 1800 sq. m. Dense vegetation reduces the amount of gas and noise pollution on the roof.

Level 'Art' - internal space - art gallery of contemporary art is consisting of exhibition halls, café, workshops, lecture rooms and other multifunctional spaces. The first floor includes transport hub. Main functions – communication and leisure.

Level 'Industrial chaos' - the part of the urban space near the CCPA that is combined with tram lines, car traffic lines and pedestrian traffic. That is a bustling area, which is actively visited by citizens. It was made for a short-term staying. Main function – transport hub.

Technical information

Main block consist of 3 different levels and of 5 different floors. It was made with hull-core structure mixed with frame structural system.
1-st level: two-storey transport hub and café.
2-nd level: two-storey exhibition hall.
3-rd level: exit to the green roof.

Both side blocks consist of 4 different floors. They were made with hull-core structure mixed with frame structural system. Transition into the main block is allowed by the tunnel-gallery from the 3-rd floor.

Underground multi-storey car parking includes 60 parking slots.
Dimensions: 6X3X2 m.
Elevator 1 lowers down car from the platform to the storage.
Conveyor allows transition of a car between levels and along the storage.
Elevator 2 lift up car from the storage to the platform.

We designed multi-functional exhibition hall that adapts to various types of expositions. We create our own grid of 'railways' on the ceiling to move paintings through the exhibition area freely. This 'railways' is a rethinking of the tram lines. Moreover, exhibition hall consist of two floor. A part of the second floor is open that gives an opportunity to place statues and pieces of art from different viewpoints.
