Project idea

The main theme of this studio was the design of a residential building on the site of an existing parking lot and Smíchov‘s Manifest Market Anděl. The assignment also included an urban solution for the existing Smíchov bus station across from the given plot. Within walking distance, there is a tram stop and the Anděl metro station, Nový Smíchov shopping center and Smíchov train station.

Project description

I designed the project with consideration for the existing apartment buildings that border the given plot. The buildings maintain a smooth line with the street, while the rear part fills in the resulting gap. Furthermore, I preserved the shape of the new buildings with a front facade that follows the street line and traditional pitched roofs combined with modern dormers and roof windows. The residential building is divided into a front and rear part, with the front part further divided into three separate units with their own entrances. Residents can access the rear unit through a passage into the inner courtyard, which is directly connected with a covered pathway. I designed the inner courtyard as a contrast to the bustling city. In addition to the covered pathway, we proposed terraces for commercial spaces, gardens, an outdoor gym, and a water feature with seating. Open spaces are covered with grass and planted with bushes and small trees.

Technical information

The load-bearing structure of the building is mainly made of reinforced concrete in form of monolithic walls and ceiling slabs. The facade is made of aluminium composite panels with different colors on each section. Roof is covered by dark red folded sheets. Dark red theme is also used on all of the dormers, some aluminium window frames with exterior blinds, and on a few facade panels. Milky layered glass is used as railing in all loggias to maximize the amount of light but preserve privacy.
