The project's initial goal was to "make the history modern" at well-known historical site 6-kilo, where it was held in the addis ababa university compound.
How do we bring history into the current era? By cooperating the site with the building, the compound is highly organic, which will improve the space quality by giving people a sense of openness (making them feel outside the building while within). The added form will provide a solution for the functionality problem, and when developing the form, the two different forms have the same layout but different factors like history and contextual factors. Our main goal is to solve existing problems on the existing building while preserving its good parts. However, adding a new structure is necessary, so doing so will give a solution for the functionality problem.
There were many issues with the design functionality and contextual parameters in the past, the concept will improve space quality for the new structure as well as for the existing building, so the pioneering thing in this project is solving those issues by adding more spaces to avoid suffocations, providing open downs to create a sense of openness and organic enviroment, adding more reading and gathering spaces to the new structure, and keep up the program library by adding new programs
We used a variety of methods to preserve this historic building, such as extending the existing structure into the new building because waffle slab construction allows for wide column-free spaces while still maintaining structural integrity because it is an adaptive reuse project.
The initial concept determines other technical details and relationships between the old and new. Opening details, louver details, and other aspects rely on how the notion is understood; also, there is a strong relationship between the old and the new; they are overlapped to create voids for openings.
