Project idea

An empty place in the heart of Ghent. A huge paved parking lot. A
piece of no man's land without qualities. Located between the Poel, the
Drabstraat and Korenlei, this place has enormous potential.
The aim of the studio is to design a city building 2.0. A
freely fillable program that serves as a social condenser. An oasis
in the center of Ghent. An open learning platform in relation to the city. A
empty place in the heart of Ghent

Project description

The project itself is translated through an interweaving of it
existing office building that accommodates the research center
with a newly designed volume as an expo and planetarium.
With the help of a wooden canopy, it becomes coherent
interaction formed with the original concrete
structure which ensures an extension of the inner space to the outer space
please.
This in conjunction with the transparency of the wooden curtain wall
a link has always been made with the spacious surroundings of the center of Ghent
and the green construction of the site.

Technical information

The construction exists out of an existing concrete office building and gets interwoven by a new wooden addition creating a poëtic interrelation between each other. The facade of the office building gets opened up by a self bearing diagrid structure made out of wood.
