Exotarium is a project for the Zoo Brno located in Brno, Czech Republic. The result is a completely new pavilion for animal species from Australia and New Guinea. Besides animal wellfare the idea is to demonstrate enviromental problems and animal species natural enviroment to the visitors.
The buildings most typical feature is the atrium, which is used for external aviaries. The building has an organic shape and central interior space from where visitors can watch animals in their aviaries. There are also several terrariums for reptiles and aquarium. Between the atrium and the aviary there is a tunnel for the communication of the animals between the enclosures. it is covered with sprayed concrete imitating stone. The project also includes facilities for employees and hygienic facilities for visitors. Material solution is designed so that the interior space does not overwhelm the aviaries, but that the aviaries are dominant. Natural materials are used here, such as wood or metal, concrete surfaces in subtle shades of color and terrazzo.
The original building did not meet the structural and technological requirements for animal welfare. The project building is designed on the site of the original building. The new one is one-story, partially embedded in the slope. Construction is made of reinforced concrete. The building also has a green roof and solar panels. The wiring is hidden under a plasterboard ceiling.
