The project is a design of the Exoteria pavilion in the Brno ZOO. At this moment there is a pavilion on the plot of land that is not in a good technical or aesthetic condition. My aim was to create a new building that would fit into the existing ZOO's urban environment with a pleasant environment for both people and animals.
In the pavilion houses are located birds from the Australia - New Guinea region. The interior of the pavilion is based on the motives of local nature, therefore it is divided into three different parts called FOREST, DESERT AND DEPTH. The cross-section of the pavilion is changing on dependance of where the visitors are. Its height gradually decreases from 7 m to 2.8 m, and the width of the corridor changes with the height. This cross-sectional change creates unique impression from each space.
Rainforest Section – An elevated, dark, narrow space with a section which represent an alley through tropical forest.
Desert – A lower, overlit open space that captures a warm desert environment.
Depth - A low, dark room without windows, reproducing the feeling of a person in the sea.
During the tour through the pavilion, the visitors will experience a journey through all the natural areas of New Guinea and get to know the local birds and animals. At the end of the tour the visitors may refresh themselves in the courtyard between the outdoor aviaries.
Due to the skewing of certain walls, the considerable elevation and the complexity of the shape, the structure is designed as reinforced concrete with a flat vegetated roof. The facade will be finished as profiled grey coloured concrete. In contrast to the grey facade, white colour is used for the entrance and for the segments extending from the building.
