Educational facilities and its built environment should be accessible to the blind and visually impaired, it needs to be inclusive. The idea of the project is to provide and Inclusive Learning Resource Center for the area, that maximizes its built environment for multisensorial wayfinding for the blind and visually impaired, at the same time seamlessly blends in the environment. To emphasize inclusivity not exclusivity, the project is not exclusive only to the blind and visually impaired but it is inclusive for them, hence the learning resource center is able to cater a wide variety of students.
The Project consists of various multisensory landmarks, for olfactory localization, auditory localization, and haptic markings. There are majority of seamless tactile glyphic markings present on the building, which encourages the lesser reliance of hand based haptic wayfinding, this was highly considered due to the pandemic it helps in lessening the spread of germs and viruses. The glyphic tactile markings were inspired from the works of So & so Studio Architects, which they initially applied on a residential home. For olfactory localization a wide variety of locally and environmentally plants were used and placed in designated spaces in the facilities, these plants include Kamuning (Murraya paniculata), a locally sourced subtle fragrant flower. examples of auditory localization is the use of rain gardens, with their initial purpose of reusing rain water it also serves as a secondary purpose for auditory localization.
the construction of the building is mainly of post and lintel, construction and reinforced concrete. finishes feature high contrast colors for specific walls and areas. this is specifically designed for color blind users, since they can mostly differentiate highly contrasted materials. the project also features an atrium at the center for maximizing of passive cooling in reducing the reliance of centralized air conditioning for transitional spaces such as hallways and lobbies. windows are tinted to reduce glare for users with light sensitivity as well. classrooms are designed with acoustic panels for sound reverberation control.
