The four-storey building is located in Starigrad, traditional Croatian village and is a part of the resort’s complex. The site is situated in a rich and diverse landscape of Croatia coastline with a complex topography that includes very steep slopes and valleys, area is characterized with downward development towards the sea and the four-storey building residential zone is placed higher than all the other zones, getting the opportunity of the whole site view and other zones and creates ribbon-type chain complex. The concept of Ezo derives exactly from enhancing visual possibilities and bringing people together while doing so. To be more precise, Ezo is the visual representation of making people to slow down and appreciate the scenery while moving and using architecture as a tool to create frameworks of everyday life’s moments, creating relationships, strengthening neighbourhood as the small representation of social community. Ezo, meaning, yard, indicates the social gathering concept, transporting social gathering space locally right next to the living spaces. The main tool supporting the concept is double staircase, which enables the closeness and privacy at the same time, allowing natural circumstances and situations to occur.
Residential building is oriented in such a way that its volume, mass is revealed fully from all the angles possible, while offering views towards the sea and also towards the yard, created between two blocks. Concept is visually represented in a simple way, single block divided into two and interconnected with shared staircase, creating view, cross ventilation and sun orientation benefits. Building consists of for floor, ground floor dedicated to parking lot and outdoor pool. First floor is dedicated to 4 bedroom apartment, 3 bedroom apartment and shared terrace. On the second floor is placed double-key apartment and 3 bedroom apartment, while on third one – 3 bedroom apartment and a big terrace. Building’s form is simple and emphasizes rectangular shapes supporting whole composition, which enhances the difference between natural surrounding and the architecture, while colour also creates the visual contrast.
For materials, limestone and mass timber was chosen for their multi-beneficial qualities. Limestone is an environment-friendly material, which also is natural insulator and flame resistant. While mass timber structures are strong and tight, is six times less than that of concrete and is ideal for surviving earthquakes. Roof is exploited with the mini-garden of local plants. Chosen materials ensure economy of building ensembling, while taking eco-friendly aspect into consideration. Building position enhances the amount of natural light.
