Project idea

The topic of the assignment was the design of a marina in Starigrad, Croatia. The marina had to contain all the necessary amenities. The conditions were small restaurants and cafes along the coast of the harbor perimeter and rental of scooters and paddleboards.

Project description

The basic concept of the design is based on the location of the plot and the terrain, these two aspects were key to the design. With a green roof, the building does not disturb the landscape and when staying on the roof cools down and acquires a natural impression of the surroundings.

The dominant feature of the building is its circular shape, which is complemented by a terraced 2-storey apartment. Thanks to this method, when staying on the roof, the visitor is offered many views of the sea and the surrounding countryside. The roof is completed with benches and a wooden walkway.

North above the marina lies the shopping center of this place. A large number of visitors are expected from this direction, who will converge on footpaths towards the marina. A "square" was built in this place for the creation of various cultural events.

Adjacent to the building on the east side is a parking lot supplemented with lots of greenery to avoid the view of parked cars. From the parking lot, a cycle path along the coast leads to the beaches and a swimming facility intended for families with children. On the west side there is a sports field with equipment for summer sports.

The building itself is made of simple materials - concrete, glass and wood. The main material is concrete, which is polished in the interiors. Concrete was chosen due to its properties. It tends to cool indoor spaces on hot summer days. The dominant feature of the entire marina is a series of anthracite columns. In front of the columns is a row of opening windows. These windows have the possibility to open in such a way that there is a full connection between the exterior and the interior. Shading partitions made of wooden ribbing on the drives were installed to prevent excessive sunlight. The partitions can be freely manipulated and thus the spaces are changed.

Technical information

The structural solution is based on a wall and skeleton system. The framework of steel columns also fulfills an aesthetic function. Brick partitions are used in the interior. The entire building is monolithic, including the ceiling and the adjacent pier. The roof of both the 1st floor and the 2nd floor is covered with a green extensive roof and is supplemented with a wooden pedestrian pier. The underground structure rests on piles, footings and foundation passes.
