Project idea

مرفأ The New Port focuses mainly on commemoration of the biggest non-nuclear explosion in history. The purpose of the rebuilding process of this port area is not only to restore functionality of the Beirut Port, but also to open it to the city. This area needs to be city-forming. Most importantly, large open areas should be more green. It is also important to create a logical space.

Project description

On the south side of the port a residential area with an small services such as shops, restaurants, cafes is foreseen. Majority of the port functions are moved to the eastern side. Between the Pound 3. and the Pound 4. a new silos building is located. It has its own particular Dock N12.
مرفأ The New Port is a project focused on building a form of commemoration. The main goal is visibility of the Silos Building – changing majority to The Museum of August 4 2020. A transition line is drawn through the middle. Thanks to that we can move from the Assembly Square to the Crater. The symbolism of the terrain shaped by the explosion shows size of the disaster. The pavement line on the eastern side outlines the earlier layout of the port. The 204 Memory Trees is located next to the Assembly Square. A transition which is created in the 204 Memory Trees leads to the symbolic Lebanese cedar. Northernmost point of the memory area is occupied by broken lump of the observation and rest desk.

Technical information

The composition of the project is made by few urban axes. In the residential part are nine 6-store buildings and of their south side are blocks with five dominants. On the west side there is the Passenger Terminal building forming the letter “L”.
