‘Babel Tower” comes from a traditional biblical story: People on the ground planed to build a tower to the sky. To disrupt this plan, God made mankind speak different languages, so they cannot communicate with each other. The plan failed, and mankind was scattered.
Since the reason that God disrupted the language of mankind is to stop Babel Tower project, from my perspective, I consider “Babel Tower” as the opposite of “chaos”, which is a special “order”. It brings peace to people derived from different cultures, and it restores order of this site in functional chaos.
Besides, as the land area is very valuable , I would like to redesign the port based on vertical space.
So the idea is "babel tower - order of chaos", I try to give a new order to this site by inserting vertical spaces (towers) with different characteristics.
Based on the information and analysis, I think that there are 4 different kinds of chaos in the contemporary port.
Chaos of culture: inter-religious conflicts, war damage to city heritage, loss of collective memory...
Chaos of landscape: huge crater after explosion, impact on ecological balance, lack of public seaside space...
Chaos of function: disruption of shipping function, lack of greenland function, loss of building function...
Chaos of economy: Slump of tourism, stagnation of port economy...
To eliminate these chaos, I use different towers with different characters to reshape this port.
The silo is the most important tower in this site, and I would like to keep it as it is now. I try to use steel wire to complete the original shape, which is like false illusion. And big trees planted on it is are simulation of dust after explosion.
