INTODUCTION;
I have design an academic library according to the context of the site .
PROJECT NAME; Academic Library
PROJECT CATEGORY; Architectural Category
Design concept is based on the following conceptual statements;
• Conceptualisation
• Design innovation
• Critical analysis
• Design sensitivity
• Sustainability
• Place making
• Forward thinking
LOCATION OF THE SITE; SirSyedUniversity of engineering and technology Karachi.
AREA OF THE SITE; 8,800SF (110’-0’’X70’-0’’)
DEVELOPERS OF THE SITE; Sir Syed university management.
NO.OF BOOKS; More than 75000
NO OF STUDENTS; 1500- 2000
CONCEPTUAL STATEMENT;
Using natural light as a day light and greenery and shaded trees in surrounding to ensure the presence of harmonious relationship between design and the natural environment that gave the sense of environmental friendly.
The purpose of daylighting is to minimize the energy consumption.
THE CHALLENGE;
In a modern society where people enjoy access to information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, what should a library for the 21st century look like, and what should it offer to the students?
This was the challenge to design a library according to the context and according to the site and the thinking of students.
PROBLEMS ONTHE TSIE:
• Noise pollution
• Less vegetation
• The another gap identified in the context of sir Syed university is non proper ramp i.e. the ramp is not according to the standard ratio 1:8.
• CONCEPT; Sustainability
SOLUTIONS;
• Increase the plantation and greenery area
• Used a sound absorber materials
• Make the ramp of standard ratio
CONCEPTUAL STATEMENT;
Using natural light as a day light and greenery and shaded trees in surrounding to ensure the presence of harmonious relationship between design and the natural environment that gave the sense of environmental friendly.
The purpose of daylighting is to minimize the energy consumption.
THE BUILDING FORM;
The form of the building is representative of its contribution to society: it is democratic, a community gathering space of equal parts. The purity and strength of a rectangular building emerged from all of the influences and requirements set out by the urban grain, and the social and community ambitions. The building concept adopts a simplerectangular form to reinforce the pedestrian link and views between the other blocks and bridge view. The building’s appearance is inspired by the fanning out of the pages of a book, with the introduction of the large glass walls andopen spaces creating a natural place for the building.
SURRONDING OF THE BUILDING;
In surroundings of the building I gave the plants, shaded trees and greenery area which controls the heat and create a cooling effect and I also used the sound absorber materials on the walls and floors of the building. I treated the elevations of the building according to the surrounding of the context and try to use natural light and try to create a greenery space surroundings of the building.
INSIDE OF THE BUILDING;
Inside of the building I defined the different space of library and divided the spaces according to the requirements of the design. The library is designed on different levels and designed for a different departments and divide the floors according to the departments.
MATERIALS USED;
Concrete
Wood and steel
Tiles, carpet
Fiber glass
