I started this project thinking about solving a catastrophe that affected Lebanon as a whole, which was the explosion of Beirut Port. This crisis has affected the country in various aspects, including the economic:
o Lack of Tourism
o High unemployment rate
o Very low GDP
o High cost of living
o Scarce Job opportunities
Social:
o No connection between city and the port.
o Lebanese consider the port as a source significant social node therefore the explosion caused a trauma to the citizens
Environmental:
o Marine and sea shores pollution
o Beirut’s river drying up
o Lebanon’s drought(underground water)
o Urban Expansion desertification
o Energy Crisis (Electricity and Petrol)
o Air Pollution due to dependency on oil for energy.
And focusing in this project on solving the economic problem by putting a specific vision of the port as a whole as follows; creating an industrial hub in the new port and a touristic destination in the sea front for the visitors and the local users, through sustainability and the highest safety standards by innovation and technology. Since the problems caused by the explosion are many, it was logical to focus on solving one important problem, and therefore the greatest focus was on the tourism part, which would provide abundant job opportunities, as well as foreign tourism and foreign currency for the country. Therefore, all analyses lead to the thought of establishing an international passenger terminal in the new vision of Beirut Port to accommodate passengers by cruise ships. The vision of the terminal project is creating it as the nucleus of the tourist destination in transportation to make the entire project coherent and connected to each other and make it easier to the tourists and the local visitors to navigate.
The main challenge in this project was the circulation we have many types of passengers, ships, trucks, cars and buses and so on. My concept is respecting the flow of passengers –arrivals or travellers- through the building, By abstracting their movement into a set of lines. The main circulation was the passengers’ trip through the building 3 types of passengers: departures, arrivals and the domestic travellers. To contain the estimated number of passenger I designed two terminal and domestic hall in between of them. It is important to differentiate between the departures and the arrivals so I decide to locate it on different levels to make it easier every level connected to the main street by bridge, and the ground level is dedicated for services and trucks movement and luggage handling. In the outdoor area the parking had been placed and also some commercial malls to generate income to the project. The project has 3 entrances connected to the main street of the port.
Used tree column in the structure system to enhance the spatial experience and, flat slab system to prevent the use of beams. To finalize the whole internal experience to the user used space truss. The outer shell consists of cladding – alucobond panels- to complete the exterior.
