The project of Port of Beirut is focused on rebuilding the terminals for the future transshipment operations and revitalizing the nearby regions to make them comfortable, attractive and prosperous.
Functional concept of the port
The project consists of two parts: functional concept of port and urban concept of surrounding areas. The first part of the project represents the detailed plan of the water area, territory and mooring front of the port. Based on calculations there were planned wharf lengths according to maximum length of water vessels and number of planned berths. Additionally there were planned water road widths, th port water area and port entrance widths along with breakwaters. The radius of th water area is 600 meters and the port entrance width is 572 meters long. It allows ships to maneuver easily in the water area of the port. Also there is planned anchorage for different types of water vessels entering the port, which is located in the northwest part behind the breakwater. The maximum length of the water vessel, that was considered in calculations, is 399-meter for a triple-e container ship.
The territory of the planned port of Beirut was divided into six terminals.
1. The automated container terminal with annual throughput and capacity of 3 million TEU.
2. The general cargo terminal is planned for transshipment operations of general cargo as well as dry bulk cargo.
3. Administration building and Offshore Support Vessels wharf.
4. Terminal ro-ro with annual throughput of 3 million ton.
5. Free Zone beside the ro-ro terminal for easier cooperation.
6. Passenger terminal located on part of western peninsula and new-build breakwater.
The territory of the port is well connected with already existing road infrastructure that assure access to the western and southern part of Beirut and other cities.
Urban concept of surrounding areas
The second part of the project is the urban concept of surrounding areas, such as Karantina and New Sector. The new breakwater is planned with an angle that allows the location of a public beach. This attraction will definitely be popular due to the fact that this is the only one public beach in this part of the city. New Sector is planned as a residential area with buildings along the coast and in the center of the area. The heights of buildings are different in order to allow the view for every resident and avoid society segregation. Additionally rooftops will be suitable for urban agriculture.
To the east of New Sector there is a memorial site of standing silo construction, which is preserved. Nearby the silo construction there is built-on glass construction with 'green oasis' in the middle. This building is used for port administration as well as for restaurants, services and viewpoints. This area will have access not only for port administration employees but also for visitors and tourists. In order to ensure safety, employees would have access by road infrastructure. However the visitors will have access only by footbridge above the highway roads and entering the build-on construction. The building will be divided into two parts: public area and the one for employees.
To the east, there is a revitalized district of Karantina. The area is divided into residential, industrial and green areas. The slaughter houses will be located underground and have straightforward road access from the general cargo and container terminals. The Eastern part of the area is industrial with logistics centers and warehouses that have direct access from the container terminal. The southeast part of the area is a park for residents of a new Karantina district and southern residential areas.
In order to ensure the sustainability of urban planning of the area around the port, there were planned urban green spaces, parks and lines of urban greenery. It will protect residents from sound pollution that comes from the port's work process. Additionally it cools the road surface and maximizes the comfort of pedestrians. Many of those elements already exist (tree valleys, urban greenery to the south of port). Although new green spaces in the New Sector and revitalized Karantina district will assure the connection of the green system in this part of Beirut.
There are 14 berth in port concept. The wharf length of different terminals are:
container terminal = 1596 m (4 berths)
general cargo terminal = 943 m (3 berths)
terminal ro-ro = 1143 m (4 berths)
passenger terminal = 1275 m (3 berths)
wharf for offshore support vessels = 140 m
th water area radius = 600 m
port entrance width = 572 m
Storage area of automated container terminal = 169,344 m2
Storage area of general cargo = 32,400 m2
Storage area of dry bulk cargo = 53,771 m2
Maximum length of water vessel in port = 399 m (Triple-e container ship)
