Project idea

The local community of Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh, India have been manufacturing world famous chanderi sarees since centuries.The manufactures of these famous sarees have been living in poor conditions hence the intent was to develop a multi-housing integrated with work areas and community spaces which bolster the ancient craft and the Indian traditions.

Project description

Houses are clustered in groups of 3 with shared work spaces and gardens for recreation.
The Indian concept of joint family lies at the core of the program. The cluster of houses can be connected for a joint family or can remain separated bringing in both privacy of nuclear family and integration of joint family. This idea has been nurtured via a central courtyard with green area for family gatherings and festivals.

The dying of cotton yarns pollutes water which has severe impacts on environment. An ongoing research on use of algal bioremediation through the use of algae laden hydrogel which purifies water as it passes through it. For this purpose biotiles have been used which draw inspiration from veins of leaf for efficient purification. A collaborative of researchers from UCL, London and Bartlett Institute have been experimenting on textile industries of Sonipat . Similar technology is used in Chanderi.
