Revitalization of the port area of ​​the city of Beirut

Project idea

The main objective of the project is the restoration and modernization of the housing stock and public infrastructure near the port areas of the city. Also, the transfer of industrial turnover to the periphery of the city.
The project uses the principle of revitalization, where revitalization is the process of recreating and revitalizing urban space, revealing new opportunities for old territories and buildings. In the process of revitalization, an integrated approach is used in order to preserve the originality, identity, identity and historical resources of the urban environment.
Ways of development
Rationale for launching the process of revitalization of the port area of ​​the city of Beirut and its further effective sustainable development:
1. Establishment of trade and production activities -
Before the explosion, the port was the main source of income for the city, having a highly developed transport and engineering structure and a number of necessary production bases. Therefore, the territory of the port should be multifunctional, and contain the necessary niches for further development.
2. Rehabilitation and improvement of the housing stock, public infrastructure of the city of Beirut
3. Reconstruction of the missing volumes of the city's recreational spaces.
Now, especially after the event of 2020, the problem of the lack of recreational spaces has become clearly visible.
The dense grid of city streets, having great potential in organizing parks and walking areas, is a highly urbanized environment with a small share of landscaping, which adversely affects the standard of living of people living in the city.
4. Improvement of ecology and use of renewable energy sources.

The entire territory is supposed to be conditionally divided into a port located in the eastern part of the site and a residential/public part located on the western side.
The port will include berths, warehouses of various types and purposes, small production centers, treatment facilities, parking lots for civil and freight vehicles, a research center and a number of administrative buildings.
On the territory of the residential / public part will be located - residential areas of various types (low-rise, high-rise, social, terraced), public and commercial, public and business and public entertainment areas, a passenger port, sports facilities, recreational areas in the form of parks and alleys, embankments.

Port.
Warehouse zones - warehouses of various types and purposes are located here: closed warehouses for piece, weight and dangerous goods, food warehouses, open storage facilities for storing containers, also a cargo inspection zone and open storage areas for the export of goods.
- Production zones - a wood processing zone, a zone for the manufacture and processing of building materials.
- Administrative zone - various administrative buildings and a small hostel for employees to stay between work shifts.
- Wastewater treatment plant area - the location of various facilities and devices for the treatment and purification of water or waste from the port.
- Research complex zone - a complex of buildings and structures aimed at studying some aspects related to port and transport activities.
- Operational zones - the lines of movement of cranes unloading and loading resources into barges arriving at the port + a place for inspecting the brought resources.
- Parking lots - parking lots for civil and freight vehicles, as well as a place for keeping carts used to transport containers.
Living sector.
Residential and public infrastructure is located in the residential area:
- Residential - three classes of housing: terraced residential buildings with closed courtyard space / the main volume is residential buildings from low to high-rise buildings with open courtyards / social housing for refugees.
- Public - includes small walking areas, separate sports complexes and outdoor sports grounds, galleries and an amphitheater and the main square with a memorial in memory of the explosion of 2020.
- Public and commercial - available in the form of two different zones. The first is an alley consisting of many small commercial buildings, the second is a market square located in the western part of the zone.
- Public and business - is a cluster of many office buildings that make up the business district in the center of the residential area.
- Recreational - a lot of alleys, embankments and parks, evenly distributed over the area of ​​the entire residential area.
- Transport - a passenger port with berths and a small area, as well as a line of separate administrative berths for individual use.
