BEIRUT PORT AREA. RAISE FROM THE ASHES

Project idea

The main idea of the project is to recreate the port of Beirut as the main recreational and economic centre of the city. The concept is to divide the area into zones : a residential zone, a commercial and economic zone, a sports and recreational zone, a zone commemorating the explosion site and a port zone. The idea determining the layout of the zones was the axis connecting the city to the explosion site. The second axis forming the layout is the park running along the site, dividing it clearly into two parts. Both axes form a closed layout, but are nevertheless extensions of important urban tracts. Overall, the project provides space for development for the city itself as a settlement unit, as well as being a kind of oasis for the residents. The variety of functions, the diversity of spaces, the clear and distinct layout of communication, the abundance of green spaces make the new Beirut waterfront area a reflection of the city itself, combining so much diversity.

Project description

The project is divided into zones. The main division of the space is formed by the newly designed circulation system. The waterfront strip contains the service buildings, the explosion memorial along with the concert hall and passenger port buildings. The waterfront strip is enclosed by the harbour zone. The whole area is divided by two axes, one in the form of a park running along the area and the other connecting the explosion site with the rest of the city. Along the transverse axis, tall office buildings are located, emphasising the layout of the composition. On the city side, the area is closed by a residential zone .

Technical information

The project was carried out using autocad, lumion and photoshop. The project occupies 3 presentation boards in A1 format, containing analyses of the existing state, conceptual diagrams, design schemes, urban concept and visualisations. The project was created under the direction of arch. Magdalena Sulima PhD, from the Faculty of Architecture at the Białystok University of Technology.
