Project idea

In the city of ancient charm creating a new building in the center of the square is a challenge, due to its irregular shape and topography of the area, which could have hindered the creative process or inspired it.
The city of Genoa keeps intact the medieval identity of the narrow streets that form the ancient center of the city, where there is a plot on which we could build a student house. In its closest neighborhood there is
The faculty of Architecture (DAD), museum S. Agostino, church Chiasa di Sal Salvadore. The area itself is very well connected with the city, and thanks to numerous buses and metro routes.

Project description

In the San Salvador square, where historically there were no buildings, the creation of a cubage which would obscure the view of the church from view openings from the streets leading to it was not the right way.
The design focuses on the motif of the tower in reference to the Lantherna, a local building towering above the city. In addition, a dominant element of the city is proposed as a new building, which can be used in city squares. Its compact plan optimally uses the plot, and additionally offers amazing views of the city and the surrounding area.
Moreover to the vertical element, the designed building itself has also a horizontal element sunk in the area that allows entry to the square. In level -1 there is a library with a reading room, student rooms, a café and a technical room. Also, you can go to the level of the square where we can look inside through the atrium, or go to a dorm room.
The above-ground part of the building consists of the entrance part from the foyer on level 0, and the studio / model building on the level +1, student rooms on the cognitions 2-13 and the observation deck on level 14.

Technical information

Four types of rooms have been proposed due to the standard and the number of tenants. In addition, there is a common space on level 1 - a model house and a studio as well as a viewing room on the roof.

The facade of the building is made of stone cladding in which windows with niches are hidden which are finished with a wooden facade. In addition, it is possible to close them with shutters, thanks to which the building's structure becomes monolithic. The shutters themselves refer to the surrounding buildings and the protection of the inhabitants of the Italian town from the sun.
