GROWTH CENTERS AND BAZAARS ARE THE ECONOMIC LIFELINES OF BANGLADESH. HOWEVER, TO MEET THE EMERGING CHALLENGES OF ECONOMIC PROGRESSION IN A MIDDLE-INCOME COUNTRY, BETTER FOOD AND NUTRITION SECURITY, THE ECONOMIC INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE BAZAARS NEEDS TO BE MORE INTEGRATED AND RESPONSIVE. BECAUSE OF URBANIZATION, THE SITUATION IS CHANGING DAY BY DAY. NOW IT’S TIME TO RETHINK THE PLANNING OF THE GROWTH CENTERS IN A WAY THAT CAN ACCOMMODATE THE CHANGE. THIS THESIS LOOKS INTO THE QUESTION OF TO WHAT EXTENT CAN ARCHITECTURE IS A PART OF THE SOLUTION.
THE CONCEPT OF REDESIGNING RANGPUR BAZAAR WAS TO REDEVELOP THIS BAZAAR KEEPING IN MIND THE PARALLEL CHANGE OF PEOPLES' CHOICE AND LIFESTYLE THAT MEETS FUTURE INNOVATION AS WELL AS PRESERVING THE HISTORY AND TRADITION OF RANGPUR BAZAAR. THERE WAS A CONCERN FOR DEVELOPING A BAZAAR SPACE THAT IS SUSTAINABLE NOT ONLY FOR THE ENVIRONMENT BUT ALSO FOR THE LOCAL USERS OF THIS PLACE. THE PROJECT MOLDS INTO SHAPE THROUGH MULTIPLE PHASES.
IN THE MASTER PLAN, THE PRIORITY WAS TO ENSURE CLEAR CIRCULATION FOR THE PEOPLE AND EASY LOADING-UNLOADING FOR THE VEHICLES. MULTIPLE ENTRY-EXIT PATHS AND WIDE CIRCULATION SPACES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED FOR EASY AND CLEAR PUBLIC MOVEMENT.
HUNDREDS OF TRUCKS, PICKUPS, RICKSHAWS, AUTOS, AND VANS CARRY GOODS TO THE MARKET EVERY DAY. THE EXISTING SERVICE ROAD (JUMMA PARA ROAD) IS TOO NARROW (12'') FOR LOADING & UNLOADING. SO IT HAS BEEN PROPOSED TO KEEP IT 30' WIDE'. AN INTERNAL 30' DEDICATED SERVICE ROAD FOR LOADING-UNLOADING ALSO OPERATES AS THE FIRE SAFETY ROAD. SEPARATE RAMPS AND A VAN STAND HAVE BEEN DESIGNED FOR LABOUR. SERVICE ENTRY AND VEHICULAR ENTRY FROM SECONDARY JUMMA PARA ROAD TO ENSURE THE LOADING-UNLOADING WITHOUT INTERRUPTING THE TRAFFIC MOVEMENT OF THE MAIN ROAD (MUNICIPAL BAZAAR ROAD).
THE AREA DEALS WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC JAMS, ESPECIALLY DURING LOADING AND UNLOADING TIME, BECAUSE THERE WAS NO SPACE FOR PARKING. THE SERVICE FUNCTIONS HAVE BEEN POSITIONED IN THE BASEMENT TO MINIMIZE THIS SITUATION. IN ADDITION, THERE IS STREET PARKING FOR MISCELLANEOUS USE.
UNAUTHORIZED TONGS, COBBLERS, TEA STALLS & RESTAURANTS CREATE A CHAOTIC SITUATION INSIDE THE BAZAAR. A DEDICATED ZONE FOR HAWKERS HAS BEEN DEVELOPED UNDER TENSILE SHEDS.
THE WET ZONE AND DRY ZONE ARE DIVIDED BY FLOORS. THE WET ZONE IS FIXATED ON THE GROUND FLOOR. THE FRUIT AND VEGETABLE MARKET IS DESIGNED IN FRONT OF THE CONNECTING ROADS TO ENSURE FREQUENT ACCESS FOR BUYERS. THE MEAT MARKET AND FISH MARKET AREA ARE PLACED INWARDS TO REDUCE ODOR & VISIBILITY FROM THE PASSERSBY.
AN "AAROT" MUST HAVE EASY COMMUNICATION WITH THE MAIN ROAD. PRODUCTS FROM DIFFERENT AREAS COME TO AAROT FOR A SHORTER TIME AND THEN ARE DISTRIBUTED INTO DIFFERENT LOCAL BAZAARS. SO AAROT SHOULD BE KEPT WITHIN REACH OF HAND TO ENSURE ENHANCED LOGISTICS OF PRODUCTS.
THE AAROT SPACE HAS BEEN DESIGNED CLOSELY ATTACHED TO THE SERVICE ROAD.
THE FIRST FLOOR AND THE SECOND FLOOR WITH WIDE CORRIDORS OF EACH BLOCK IS DESIGNED IN THIS NON-AIR-CONDITIONING MARKET TO ATTEND TO THE HUGE BUYER AND THEIR FLOWS. THE DOUBLE-HEIGHT SPACES PROVIDE HUGE OPENNESS, NATURAL LIGHT, AND VENTILATION TO THE BAZAR. THE DRY ZONE IS ON THE FIRST FLOOR AND THE THIRD FLOOR HOUSES OFFICE AND RENTAL SPACES.
A GRID PATTERN DESIGN IS PRESENT FOR THE CIRCULATION OF SHOPS. SHOPS FOLLOWING THE EXISTING BAZAAR SCHEMATICS HAVE BEEN PROPOSED WITH AN ARCHITECTURAL SOLUTION WHERE THE SELLERS CAN NOT ONLY SIT ERGONOMICALLY BUT ALSO EXPERIENCE THE TRADITIONAL FEELING. A SEPARATE ZONE FOR VEGETABLES, FRUITS, FISH, MEAT, POULTRY, AND SLAUGHTERING SPACE HAS BEEN DESIGNED WITH AMPLE NATURAL LIGHT AND VENTILATION AS WELL AS WASTE AND WATER DISPOSAL AMENITIES IN MIND. FOR THE VENDORS, ENOUGH DISPLAY AND STORAGE SPACE HAS BEEN PROVIDED.
THE HEART OF THIS BAZAR IS THE CENTRAL BREATHING SPACE, CREATING A UNIQUE AMBIANCE FOR THE MARKET. IT COULD ALSO BE A INTERESTING ELEMENT FOR THE CITY. LOCAL VENDORS CAN CONDUCT BUSINESS IN THE TEMPORARY SHADES. PLANTATION AND SITTING AMENITIES ARE PROVIDED ON THE CENTRAL PLATFORM SO THAT PEOPLE CAN COME AND SPEND TIME THERE. THE TREES WILL CAUSE THE SURFACE TO COOL DOWN AND CREATE A PLEASANT ENVIRONMENT. IT WILL CREATE A PERFECT HARMONY BETWEEN TRADITION AND MODERN INNOVATION, INSPIRING YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS AND ENHANCERING THE CITY'S NEW BUSINESS, RETAIL, AND RESIDENTIAL DEMANDS.
THE BUILDING PROCESS INVOLVES THE USE OF LOCAL MATERIALS AND THE PARTICIPATION OF LOCAL PEOPLE IN CONSTRUCTION WORK. BRICK WALLS, BRICK PAVING, CONCRETE FLOOR, CONCRETE ROOF, AND STEEL COLUMNS ARE PROPOSED TO BUILD THE WHOLE MARKET. TREE COLUMNS MADE OF STEEL ARE A VITAL STRUCTURAL ELEMENT OF THIS PROJECT. THE WALLS BUILT FROM SIMPLE TRADITIONAL BRICK BONDS WHERE PERFORATED BRICK WALLS CREATE MULTIPLE GEOMETRIC PATTERNS OF LIGHT AND SHADOW THAT BECOME DESIGN ELEMENTS CAPABLE OF GENERATING A UNIQUE ATMOSPHERE. THE PERFORATED WALLS ALSO CREATE AN AESTHETIC AMBIENCE.
WASTE MANAGEMENT FACILITIES AND A DISPOSAL ZONE ARE AVAILABLE AT THE BAZAAR. AT NIGHT, ORGANIC AND NON-ORGANIC WASTES ARE GATHERED FOR DISPOSAL. A DEDICATED ZONE WITH A ROTATOR HAS BEEN PROVIDED FOR ORGANIC WASTE COMPOSING. WASTEWATER COLLECTS ON THE SURFACE, THEN CLEANED WITH A TRICKLING FILTER BEFORE DISPATCHING IT INTO THE RIVER. THESE HELP IN TURNING THE BAZAAR INTO AN ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE COMMERCIAL ZONE IN THE FUTURE.
SOLAR SYSTEM OPTIONS ARE INSTALLED ON THE BAZAAR ROOF. SOLAR PANELS, A RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEM, WILL PRODUCE SIGNIFICANT OUTPUTS BY REDUCING OVERALL ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN THE MARKET ZONE, INCLUDING FINANCIAL BENEFITS.
DUE TO THE PROPOSED SYSTEM'S LOW COST, EASE OF CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION, AND SO ON, RAINWATER HARVESTING OPPORTUNITIES HAVE BEEN MADE AVAILABLE. A RAINWATER HARVESTING SYSTEM WILL HELP MEET FUTURE NON-POTABLE WATER DEMAND PRIOR TO THAT.
