Project idea

The main idea of the project is to reach a sustainable plan, including culture and tradition from Beirut. The project proposes the slogan Be BEIRUT to reclaim the devastation from the explosion and turn it into a step forward towards the future of the city.

Project description

Through the analysis carried out in Greater Beirut, we found key points that set the tone for the new development. Heat islands, lack of green areas, vehicular density, lack of public transportation, cultural division, and the river. These six points are what start our proposal for the Beirut of tomorrow.
We achieved this through the creation of a protected green area in the form of a belt, the recovery of the Beirut River in relation to the sea front, the incorporation of roads for public transport and bicycle paths, and finally the distribution of green areas that are born from the port and integrate the city.
The strategy used was to separate the cargo port and the passenger port to free the area into three districts: innovation, economic and cultural, in which an urban project is developed that responds to the points mentioned before.

Technical information

This urban plan proposes the division of the Port into cargo and passenger. The cargo port will be conformed of 90 hectares living the rest for the districts and natural protected areas described previously. The project Proposes the rehabilitation of the river mouth and the integration of canals to the city, these canals seek to confront sea levels rising in the future and protect the inner city. The green belt is formed of a natural barrier that also seeks to protect the city from the ocean as well as contrasts with the contamination from the port. Finally, the green spaces in the inner city will be accomplished by trade, giving land in the new development in order to integrate parks, public spaces and nature in the city. These decisions are focused in tackling of the well-known Heat Islands.
