Project idea

In the heart of Old Dhaka, the library will bear the footmarks of all the cultural, social, and political changes that took place.
The mixed-use, narrow buildings of old Dhaka present a very interesting urban fabric. Recently, the government has declared this area as a heritage site. The site has the potential to become a tourist spot because many buildings in old Dhaka represent the architectural history of Dhaka.

To identify the generic of old Dhaka, I worked with some metaphoric concept: 1. the Path or Goli; 2. Open space in between buildings; 3. Two buildings with a goli in between 4. The narrowest building.

Project description

Project Objectives:
 To study the different functions and activities of a community library, along with ergonomics, functional sequence, and space requirements.
 To develop the understanding of architectural form generation and relationships among form, site, climate and functions.
 To develop the skill to solve different entry approaches, parking, circulation and different types of public functions while considering climatic factors and occupants’ comfort.

Technical information

For the exterior façade, I used red brick to give the appearance of a traditional building in old Dhaka and merged it with the site.
Also try natural ventilation with respect to the old Dhaka context. It will provide better humidity control, lower operating and maintenance costs, better health and wellness, and access to daylight.
