Sometimes we need a new chapter in the city's life to irradiate social disjunction. In a city where disjunction occurs, it is important to strive for a utopian vision, learning from the mistakes to move ahead. A return that allows reconciliation and unity and physical proximity.
Cyprus is a country located in the Mediterranean and presents such problematic.
it is an island that has suffered social disjunction between two people of different identities while having the same belonging to the country.
What's common between these two groups is very much existing before the war, they lived together and shared the common land. it is a green line that ends at a city called Famagusta. Why Famagusta?
Famagusta is a city located by the sea. it is composed of a superposition of a historic layer, that has diverged and changed throughout time. In 1974 a war-ravaged Cyprus, between the Turks and the Greeks, who were forced to leave their homes, and their city Varosha. Today, Varosha is an abandoned city, forgotten, and Varoshans that dream to come back there one day...
Can we relive the commun? What are the criteria to create a city ideal for both people?
According to a report done by the SDDP, the solutions are to have a political force, just like the European Union, which is very important so that the people would feel security. The cultural exchange and social one are important for these groups of different identities.
After an urban analysis, the proposition is to revive the agora and to choose political, cultural, and social functions by creating an ecological city, an exemplar city in Cyprus. The core will be located in between these 3 entities of Famagusta: the fortified city, the developed one, and the dead city of Varosha.
Three-Axis are proposed, the first one limits the political function of Famagusta and generates the new proposed function: the European Union. The second axis starts at the ancient city and draws along its way various cultural functions, reaching the proposed bazaar. Finally, the third axis is the green one that starts at Varosha and passes through the Greek and Turk memorial. It's the ecological network of the new city.
these three functions are the strength vessels of the new exemplary city, where "2 Cypruses" can live together.
The concept is creating an ecological city. the intervention prioritizes public spaces in each proposal and an integration of green spaces to increase sustainability.
These are the material: saint Gobain glasses, horizontal louvers on the south and vertical on east and west, fiber reinforced concrete, green space, and gravel on the roof.
Structures are designed in order to collect rainwater.
the project respects the 4 senses of comfort, feel, breath, hear and see.
