Project idea

The goal of this project was to create a covered place for the visitors of the castle Mladá Boleslav and enhance the experience of their visit.
The bastion nowadays serves as a view point but the desired fonction is to use it also as a place of cultural events and meetings.

Project description

The concept of bastion roofing solutions seeks to combine the modern concept of architecture, such as membrane structures, with the historical setting of the site. The roofing uses a membrane to create a gothic vault, building on the history of the originally gothic castle. The entire roof is created by eight membrane fields, each supported by a single column. This column then faces the vaults, which creates the impression of the interior of a medieval castle or cathedral and thus fits into the location in an original yet sensitive way. The whole structure is also tilted to peek only slightly over the walls of the parkland, inspiring the curiosity of passers-by and inviting them to visit this interesting monument. This roofed parkland is then complemented by a stage and a small stage, designed to hold various cultural events, as well as a small background providing refreshments and toilets for visitors.

Technical information

The structure is divided into eight identical arrays which are interconnected to ensure their spatial stability and the individual arrays function together as one continuous structure carrying only the axial load to the columns. The field is made up of a central column, which carries a square steel frame through the diagonal supports, to which a membrane is attached by the bars with the fixing profile. The membrane is then stretched out by the steel hoop and clamped and attached to the head of the pillar. The whole structure thus forms the shape of a funnel. Rainwater collects in the head of the column and is brought through the filtration grate to the centre. The head of the column consists of a two-part sheet metal cover, which can be removed for cleaning and maintenance and access to the stretching of the membrane. The column itself is cladded with spruce boards thus fits better with its surroundings. Water that is seduced by the interior of the structure flows at the base of the column through a KG pipe in the foundation and is withdrawn into the original drainage of water from the parkland. The pillar is anchored over the thorns into the reinforced concrete base.
