Project idea

The main idea of the project was to analyze and to find a way to give additional value to a complex of halls build in the 1950s in on the location of the Viennese Arsenal. The whole process began with thorough analysis of the historical development of the area, follow by a study of the specified object. Through a light-construction intervention based on a modular system specifically designed for this project, the spaces are re-defined and a new set of individual and group working spaces is achieved in the old hall construction.

Project description

1. Time
The overlay of historical layers creates a multi-characteristic context, where we can no longer see it as a set of multiple objects, but rather have to concern ourselves with the system as a whole. In a respectful manner my proposal connects some of the undervalued objects in the heart of the complex, which appear as a result of the demolitions after the second world war and the pragmatic manner of building in the 1950s. Addition instead of demolition was the motto of the work process, achieving an almost non-interventional approach through which a Mehrwert is achieved without destroying the Alterswert.
2. Line
A new symbiosis is achieved through the implementation of the shared spine. It deals as a connection between inside and outside, big and small, near and far. By bridging the physical barrier between the objects it reaches for a new, more dynamic life for the existing structures.
3. Sequence
Each of the individual spatial characteristics joint through the path is not suppressed, but rather highlighted through the comparison with the line on its own. It deals as the red thread, which leads you through the story allowing one to always be able to reference his position in the system. The full potential of the structure is achieved through the user and his movement in relation to it.
4. System
Going out from the Mat-Structure-Hypothesis the system is created in a repetitive way, where in order to balance the collective pattern and the individual preferences a clear organization of the spaces is made through attaching the functional spaces to the main spine. The functional spaces on their own divide themselves into closed volumes for more specific activities and the more neutral plateau, which depending on the arrangement of the modules could host different functions, which also do depend of the needs of the user.
5. Element
The system is a set of elements, but the logic of the system defines the logic of the element and not the other way around. Through developing custom aluminum profiles, much better connection between the elements is achieved, while simultaneously diversifying the repetitive pattern.
6.Performance
Reflecting the currant functional condition of the objects, the new system works as a multiplier and additionally a new public layer of the structure. It creates a performative experience, where as a set of Matryoshka dolls each of the shells acts individually, but always refering to the system as a whole.

Technical information

The system is developed with the help of 6 aluminum profiles, through which a easy-to-build, modular system allows wide variety of uses.
