Whitechapel Bell Foundry, manufactured bells on-site since 18th century in London, will be converted into an industrial library in the project. As there is no longer a significant demand on casting large bells, people shift to craft small artworks instead. In order to relate the library with existing building’s history, handicraft industry has been chosen as the main theme and the library will be organized on behalf of the Crafts Council, which is an organization to support the growth and development of the sector.
As the handicraft industry is growing rapidly, it is important to have a space for craft lovers to gather. The project aims to convert the existing Whitechapel Bell Foundry into a multi-purpose library to serve the community as an informative and experiential centre.
In order to retain the value of a Grade II* Listed building, the project must preserve historical features to showcase bell manufacturing in the past, at the same time it should be able to present core value of the newly developed handicraft industry to the public.
