Project idea

Recently, Surabaya has provided buses as mass transportation in the city that people would call “Suroboyo Bus”. Uniquely, bus tickets can be purchased by exchanging plastic bottles and cups, and this method were only applied in Surabaya, whereas other cities use money as their currency. However, this noble goal raises new problems, namely the accumulation of plastic garbage in several landfills. Used plastic glasses and bottles deposited by Suroboyo Bus passengers are left offhand without further handling. Other problems such as lack bus information, vandalism and less-friendly disabled facility were also quite concerning. Therefore, this proposed design tries to solve those problems by integrating plastic bottles and cups as a design element. The bus shelter is designed simple yet iconic, with modular construction for easier installation on locations, equipped with built-in technology to notify bus arrival and hidden cameras to monitor security and improper actions.

Project description

This proposed bus shelter design are addressed only for Surabaya City in East Java, Indonesia. The main objective is to create a simple, modular, yet iconic bus shelter specialized for only this city. To achieve this objective, this design use the most of modular materials (such as concretes and aluminium panels) and the simple curve that represents this city's icon as the form. By creating a modular design, this bus shelter can be applied to many places and occasions throughout the city, and also easier for the installation. Other than that, this bus shelter design also support this city's unique method (which use plastic bottle as currency for bus tickets) by using plastics as its facade, and also improved technology and security.

Technical information

The minimum dimension required for this bus shelter design are 9 meters x 2.5 meters with minimum height of 2.5 meters as well. The material that are used are mostly concrete and colored aluminium panels.
