Project idea

People today, look forward to performing various activities in a single location that boost ease of access, flexibility and comfort. In this project, I was to design a travelers hotel in Chow Kit, Malaysia.

The inspiration of this hotel is drawn from 'voronoi diagrams', in which a whole area is divided into regions, where each region has a central point. I would like to incorporate this spatial arrangement in my design where each space has a central focal point which may express what that space may co-relate too or utilize masterpieces that celebrate the culture of chow kit.

The concept that I have formulated is to emphasize on versatility of the spaces which fit the sentiments of the people as well as unite them. This can be done by creating a seamless harmony with various spaces with the help of minimal usage of wall barriers and through open spaces that are connected by corridors.

Therefore, the hotel will not only be a building that provides rest and stay for the users but will also incorporate various other amenities such as co working units, workshops, gym and open spaces that can be utilized for small events or exhibitions ,etc.

Besides this the hotel will incorporate sustainable feature that improve building performance as well as increase the comfort levels of the users.

Project description

The site is located in Chow Kit, Malaysia, a well known location that invites business men, workers, tourists as well as families due to the various commercial building and attractions spots around the site. Since the location of the site is a bit tight in terms of traffic circulation. The overall building will be divided into two where one consists of the drop off for hotel users and the other consists of the drop off for the amenity users. This is done based on the time spent by users at the drop off , hence incorporating the voronoi diagrams.

The ground floor will incorporate a large open space can be used for small events such as exhibitions, etc. A rentable bicycle shop will also be incorporated to encourage users to boost the usage of cycles around the site .

The first floor will consist of a public co working space that is catered to various users including those that use wheelchairs. A horticulture workshop will also be provided so as attract users to the site as well as increase profit. Besides this, a mini mart will be incorporated to provide refreshment's for those utilizing the co-working and workshop spaces.

The hotel will consist of 15 key units that can be used by various users coming to the site such as travelers, business man, families ,students, etc. These will be located on the higher floors (2nd and 3rd floor) so as to boost privacy, since the lower floors ( ground floor & 1st floor) will be dedicated for public use. A gym is also incorporated that will be open for both hotel as well as other users to improve profit levels.

The sustainability features are drawn based on the various natural features around the site. The following strategies were used.

-Since there is abundant sunlight from the south , the building will utilizing galvanized plant boxes with steel rods to lower the amount of sunlight entering the building. This not only reduces the building's energy usage levels but also improve thermal comfort.

- Sun blockers will also be utilized around the building to avoid unwanted sunlight into the spaces.

-Two drops offs will be provided to improve traffic circulation around the site as traffic can cause pollution.

-Large voids and usage of louvers will be incorporated to boost cross ventilation in the building.

-Various walls will be dressed with specific types of plants to boost users comfort levels such as air circulation, views as well as the aesthetics of the building.

- The building will also incorporate the users to use bicycles instead of fuel running vehicles to reduce pollution

Technical information

The building will utilize concrete metal decking so as to span the large open spaces and cantilevers provided in the building.

Since the roof used will be flat, green roofs are utilized to not only improve the building's efficiency but also to cater to the rain water that may be accumulated.

The windows will be double glazed with low- e coating as they reduce energy usage by controlling daylight entering in the space and
is also know for their good soundproofing properties.

The building will consist of lifts to improve vertical circulation where machine-roomless elevators will be used to improve energy efficiency, hence directly reducing building carbon footprint.

The mechanical and electrical rooms will be located in the basement and the hotel will use cross ventilation system (mechanical and natural ventilation combined) in various spaces. The hotel key units will maintain air circulation and cooling with the help of centralized air-cooled HVAC system.

The building will also incorporate a fire room to improve the fire detection and suppression process in the case of a fire breakout.
