Project idea

The square of the city of Serang is located in a very strategic area, right in the middle of the city, and is surrounded by government area, school, hospital, residential and commercial area. This square is divided into two parts such as the west which is functions as the main open space, and the east which contains the recreational functions. This square also happens to be the only public open green space in the area of 1km, which makes this public open space one of the most important in the area to accommodate the society's public needs.

Unfortunately, some problems were encountered in this square such as the shifting of the main social value caused by the economic value that happens in the square, unsatisfaction of the society while spending time in the square and the square is said to not representing the face of the city of Serang as a province of Banten.

Therefore, the design goals are to revitalize the main value of the Serang city’s square as well as to represent the face of the city of Serang through a placemaking approach to produce an active square that could give satisfaction to the community.

Project description

The concept used in this revitalization process is “pocket of activity”, a concept to transform the square of the city of Serang as not only open green space but also a place where the community could express themselves, to form a sense of belonging of the square and various optional activities could happen flexibly.

The pocket of activity concept in this design aims to produce a public space that is more balanced in terms of the social, functional, and activity aspects. The pocket of activity's concept is implemented into the site of the square in the shape of pockets, where each pocket accommodates several facilities. The pockets of this activity are arranged/distributed in a balanced manner throughout the site of the square. The distribution and placement of pockets are carried out based on the results of the site analysis and based on the results of visitor's needs obtained from survey activities. With these pockets of activity, the town square of Serang can be active and live in a balanced way, and the activities that are formed become more flexible. The circulation that is formed from this concept is also becoming neater and can reduce the phenomenon of shifting the main functions of public space.
