Project idea

The main aim of the project was to bring to students from FTVS (Faculty of Physical Education and Sport of Charles University) everything their campus lack of. The student complex by Džbán reservoir consists of student dormitories, a sports centre, an indoor sprinter track, a swimming pool, wet and dry wellness and restaurants, even a beauty salon. Another important factor was making the complex easily accessible by foot, therefore every part is connected. It is also very easy for them to cross the reservoir and get to the other side of Džbán. The building forms a natural dominant feature of the whole area.

Project description

We wanted to create a path that connects both south and north bank of the reservoir and ensures year-round use of the whole area. The path concept is supported by the white façade / roof, which wraps around the dormitory, transforms itself into the roof of the bridge and then turns down the swimming pool. This element completes the whole complex and brings lightness and elegance to it.

The student dormitories have various types of rooms to choose from (viz 8th level floorplan), the basic unit is a cell for four students with a kitchen and sanitary facilities. the parking lot of the complex is under the sports centre and can serve all visitors of the area and the nearby faculty.

Technical information

The main bridge is a suspension bridge with a span of 140m, the distance from the water level is 10m and the height and width of the cross section is also 10m. The supporting rope is anchored to the foundations of the buildings on both sides of the tank. the weight of the buildings acts as a weight and prevents the anchor rope from being pulled out. The stabilization of the bridge is ensured by a stabilizing rope, which is connected to the supporting rope by tie rods and struts. On both sides of the bridge there are pylons that protrude from the buildings and tension the supporting ropes between them. A steel frame is attached to the supporting rope, which supports both bridge decks and at the same time stresses the roof of the footbridge, which is made of ETFE foil.
