Project idea

MUSEION is a multicultural set of buildings of the European cultural institute, located in Prague quarter Veleslavín, at the place of present car show. Main task of the project was to show new shape of the centre of this urbanistically omitted part of Prague, including design of a square, meeting place, which is, except few parks, missing.

The Cultural institute is divided into three buildings, designed in harmony with former vernacular buildings, where is located café, library, multipurpose cultural hall, classrooms, archive, and administration offices. All buildings are oriented into the new square and Veleslavínská str., at the same time communicating with the back, semi-public yard. It could be used for summer cultural events, including the amphitheatre, copying the rising terrain.

Project description

The two-storey café and library building is located closest to Veleslavínská Street. The ground floor with a café is open to the public space and the courtyard thanks to large glass windows, which allows the inner space to communicate with passers-by and at the same time not to interrupt the operation of cultural events in the courtyard or amphitheater. The library on the 2nd floor turns mainly into a quiet part of the courtyard and a large glass window to the south side for better sunbathing of the interior. Toilets and technical facilities are located in the 1st floor, as well as in the neighboring hall, which makes it possible to use other spaces more efficiently.

The central multifunctional cultural hall is the most important, dominant building of the whole complex. Visually, it is a two-storey building, which is in fact largely formed by one open space with concert acoustics of the hall. On the east side towards the square there was a cash register and a foyer with a bar offering refreshments during cultural events. At the level of the 2nd floor, above the foyer, there is a view of the Veleslavín chateau and a balcony allowing you to watch theatrical events. Premises for performers, technical facilities and toilets were located on the 1st floor, where there is also a cloakroom for visitors. An important element of this building is the west wall, which can be used from the outside as a background or projection area for cultural events realized in the amphitheater.

The third building of the cultural center is an educational-administrative building in the northern part of the plot, adjacent to the administrative building of the car showroom. Its basement, unlike other parts of the complex, is designed as an archive with a research room, and sanitary facilities are located on all floors. The ground floor contains two classrooms and a congress hall for conferences, the 2nd floor serves as a background for the administrative and technical staff of the cultural center, for which there are two offices and a meeting room complemented by a terrace for staff relaxation.
