Project description

Ostrava is a city that has earned the nickname "black". It is famous for its well-developed industry, which, however, is gradually disappearing. In recent years, efforts have been made to green it up. To make it more attractive to people so that they do not leave it.

The assignment was Halda Hrabuvka. A place where waste from Dolní Vítkovice used to be exported. It was no longer needed after the ironworks closed. It was subsequently reclaimed. An artificial oasis was created. A landscape created by machines. I chose not to disturb this landscape. To approach it with respect, and just put a new layer on top of it. A layer for the people. To preserve its character, and in doing so, to create the conditions so that there is a space where people can spend time.

By following the layers, I place objects on top of it, where one can sit, create, meet, learn something. I am creating a diverse space that keeps changing but does not disturb the already existing surroundings. Places where the interior flows into the exterior and their thin border. I take from the designed mass and fuse it as a reaction to the surroundings. I take into account the place where the mass is located on Halda, the views, the proximity to the green area and I also take into account the busy Mestecka Street.

I focused on the spatial variability and the changeability of the atmosphere in and around the objects. Transparent and opaque surfaces that determine how intensely we perceive the surroundings, and how we are perceived by the surroundings. The programmatic filling is not defined because our spatial demands change more and more rapidly. The only determining factor is the space itself and its interconnectedness with its surroundings.
