Brno water reservoirs Tomáš Gilar

The idea of this project is to reuse unused water tanks with functions and means to create an unforgettable and unique spatial experience in different situations. Therefore, each water tank is used in a different way. Two of the tanks are left as they are, with only minor additions, and in two other tanks I have intervened in the supporting structure.


Water tank No. 1 - Museum

The oldest water tank is made of red brick solid and the structure is well preserved, so I decided to convert this water tank into a museum. I will build adequate access through the new building that will form the street line of Hardy Street. The building will offer technical facilities for the museum, a base, space for staff, a cloakroom and toilets. A lift will provide wheelchair access to the water tank. There will be an exhibition space in front of the entrance to the water tank itself. As this water tank does not have a flat floor, I decided to flood the water tank to a height of 1.2 m to multiply the spatial experience. I'll build a circular path through the reservoir. I will use the entrance built in 2019-2020 as a second entrance/escape.


Water reservoir No. 2 - Market Hall

The second water tank, for which there is almost no technical documentation, is hidden underground in the flat part of the site. The features I have placed in this water tank are from the catering industry. I have combined an unrepeatable spatial experience with a visit to a restaurant or a café.
I have created a new entrance building at the northern corner of the water tank. The single-storey simple building hides only the staircase and the elevators to the underground. I brought natural light into the water tower by knocking out some of the vaults, then created a corridor and then 6 rentable spaces for a restaurant, bistro, cafe, shops, etc. At the entrance to the water tank there is a part reserved for toilets and technical facilities.


Water reservoir No. 3 - Library + gallery

The third concrete water tank has two tanks and a fitting chamber. I decided to divide this water tank into 2 different functions. I will leave the northern tank as it is and use this incredible space with its columns and over 5 meters of clearance as an exhibition gallery. I will convert the second tank, which has internal dimensions of 33 x 53 metres, into a library by demolishing the middle 12 columns to create a central atrium. Above this tank I have designed a 2-storey extension which will be connected to the water tank structure. The armature chamber will serve as one of two locations for vertical communication.

Myšlenkou tohoto projektu je nově využít nepoužívané vodojemy funkcemi a prostředky, aby byl vytvořen nezapomenutelný a neopakovatelný prostorový zážitek v různých situacích. Proto je každý vodojem využit jiným způsobem. Dvě nádrže jsou ponechány ve stávajícím stavu a doplněny jen malým zásahem a v dvou dalších nádržích jsem zasáhl do nosné konstrukce.


Vodojem č. 1 – Muzeum

Nejstarší vodojem je zděny z červených cihel plných pálených a konstrukce je dobře zachovaná, proto jsem se rozhodl přetvořit tento vodojem na muzeum. Vybuduji adekvátní přístup skrz novou budovu, která bude tvořit uliční čáru ulice Tvrdého. Objekt nabídne technické zázemí muzea, podkladnu, místo pro zaměstnance, šatnu a toalety. Bezbariérový přístup do vodojemu zajistí výtah. Před vstupem do samotného vodojemu bude prostor pro expozici. Protože tento vodojem nemá rovnou podlahu, tak jsem se rozhodl zatopit vodojem do výšky 1,2 m a znásobit tak prostorový zážitek. Vybuduji okružní cestu skrz vodojem. Vstup vybudovaný v roce 2019-2020 využiji jako druhý vstup/únikový východ.


Vodojem č. 2 - Tržnice

Druhý vodojem, ke kterému není skoro žádná technická dokumentace je ukrytý pod terénem v rovinaté části areálu. Funkce, kterou jsem umístil do tohoto vodojemu jsou z gastronomie. Propojil jsem neopakovatelný prostorový zážitek s návštěvou restaurace, nebo kavárny.
Vytvořil jsem nový vstupní objekt u severního rohu vodojemu. Jednopodlažní jednoduchý objekt ukrývá pouze schodiště a výtahy do podzemí. Do vodojemu jsem přivedl přirozené světlo pomocí vybourání části některých kleneb, dále jsem vytvořil koridor a následně 6 pronajímatelných prostor pro restauraci, bistro, kavárnu, obchody, atd. U vstupu do vodojemu je část vyhrazená pro toalety a technické zázemí.


Vodojem č. 3 – Knihovna + galerie

Třetí betonový vodojem má dvě nádrže a armaturní komoru. Rozhodl jsem se rozdělit tento vodojem na 2 rozdílné funkce. Severní nádrž ponechám ve stávajícím stavu a využiji tento neuvěřitelný prostor se sloupořadím a světlou výškou přes 5 metrů jako výstavní galerii. Druhou nádrž, která má vnitřní rozměry 33 x 53 metrů přetvořím na knihovnu, tak že vybourám prostředních 12 sloupů a vznikne tak středové atrium. Nad tuto nádrž jsem navrhl 2 podlažní nástavbu, která bude navazovat na nosnou konstrukci vodojemu. Armaturní komora poslouží jako jedno ze dvou míst pro vertikální komunikaci.
