Cancer Prevention Centre

The project of the Cancer Prevention Centre on the premises of the Masaryk Cancer Institute at Žlutý Kopec is inspired by the motif of fragility that characterises the nature of this inscrutable cancer, where the patient is constantly balancing on the plane of life and death. The design absorbs this motif and transfers it to the plot, which balances on the very border between the hospital grounds and the garden colony, over which the sloping terrain looks out onto the panorama of Mendel Square, Brno and the nearby Pálava Hills.

The Prevention Centre uses this location and its elevation not only to emphasize the precariousness and balance, but also to connect the Yellow Hill site imaginatively with the adjacent urban structure. Especially when viewed from Mendl Square, the whole area appears as an impenetrable wall. The task of the Prevention Centre is to break this boundary, to communicate with the city, and thus to reach out to its inhabitants to undergo a preventive examination that has the potential to save hundreds of lives.

The desire for connectivity is evident in both the massing and the layout, with a dominant volume emerging throughout the design, an imaginary bridge that connects the two main directions of access for patients and the city. This section encapsulates the backbone of the operation - a commercial prevention program caring for the general population, and thus best overrides the previously mentioned precariousness, especially in its expression and execution in two directions, which permeates the remaining masses serving as the foundation and center of gravity.

Another important element that strongly influences the form of the design is the motif of the road, which is inscribed in the vertical roads outside and inside the building. This is primarily a series of straight staircases that help to form the building's characteristic silhouette. Visitors thus gain a better understanding of the hierarchy of the interior spaces behind the envelope, thus eliminating the fear of the unknown that must be overcome during preventive treatment.

The material and formal design is directly linked to the operational design. While a significant part of the "bridging" is devoted to the core commercial programme, the imaging methods that are the basis of diagnosis are located in the "centre of gravity". The remaining operations, such as the physicians' facilities, administration and inpatient wards, are located in the northern building, the so-called "wall", which is the last "hospital" instance of the centre and is directly connected to the adjacent Moravek Pavilion. The technical facilities and the parking garage are hidden under a platform with a green roof that fills the space between the masses of the "centre of gravity" and the "wall", thus making the atmosphere of the building more pleasant.

The purpose of the centre is to invite the inhabitants of the city to visit the centre for preventive care, but for this to happen, there must be a relationship between the patients and the building that is free of fear and full of trust - the Prevention Centre must not lie. Rather than being hidden behind an illegible façade, the hierarchy of the premises must come to the surface. This principle is especially true of the commercial portion of the building, where not only the vertical circulation and skylights, but also the supporting structure of the building are inscribed into the silhouette of the mass.

The form of the "center of gravity" and "wall" relates to the flat and grounded nature of both parts, which transfer the loads from the executed "bridging". The façades are therefore dominated by the rhythm of the balconies and lintels which, despite the fact that both parts are full of glazed openings, are intended to emphasise the weight of the masses and thus establish a balance in the composition of all parts of the Prevention Centre.

Projekt Centra prevence rakoviny v areálu Masarykova onkologického ústavu na Žlutém kopci je inspirován motivem vratkosti, která je charakterizuje povahu tohoto nevyzpytatelného nádorového onemocnění, kdy pacient neustále balancuje na rovině života a smrti. Návrh tento motiv vstřebává a přenáší jej na parcelu, která balancuje na samotné hranici mezi nemocničním areálem a zahradnickou kolonií, přes kterou ze svažitého terénu shlíží na panorama Mendlova náměstí, Brna a nedalekých Pálavských vrchů.

Centrum prevence využívá této lokality a jejího převýšení nejen ke zdůraznění vratkosti a rovnováhy, ale také k pomyslnému propojení areálu Žlutého kopce s přilehlou městskou strukturou. Zejména při pohledu z Mendlova náměstí se celá oblast jeví jako neprostupná hradba. Úkolem Centra prevence je porušit tuto hranici, komunikovat s městem a tím oslovit i jeho obyvatele, aby se podrobili preventivní prohlídce, která má potenciál zachránit stovky životů.

Touha po propojení je zřetelná jak v hmotovém, tak i půdorysném řešení, kdy v celém návrhu vyvstává dominantní objem, pomyslné přemostění, které propojuje dva hlavní směry přístupu pacientů a město. Tato část v sobě skrývá páteř provozu - komerční prevenční program pečující o běžné obyvatele, a tudíž nejlépe přepisuje dříve zmíněnou vratkost, především pak svým výrazem a vykonzolováním ve dvou směrech, které prostupuje zbývajícími hmotami sloužícími jako základ a těžiště.

Další důležitým prvkem, který výrazně ovlivňuje podobu návrhu, je motiv cesty, který se propisuje do vertikálních komunikací vně i uvnitř stavby. Jedná se především o sérii přímých schodišť, která napomáhají utvářet charakteristickou siluetu budovy. Ze strany návštěvníků tak dochází k lepšímu pochopení hierarchie vnitřních prostor skrývajících se za obvodovým pláštěm a je tak eliminován strach z neznáma, který je nutno při prevenční léčbě překonat.

Hmotové a formální řešení přímo navazuje na řešení provozní. Zatímco stěžejnímu komerčnímu programu je věnována výrazná část „přemostění“, zobrazovací metody, která jsou základem diagnostiky, jsou umístěny v „těžišti“. Zbývající provozy jako zázemí lékařů, administrativa a lůžkové oddělení, jsou umístěny v severním objektu, takzvané „hradbě“, která je poslední „nemocniční“ instancí centra a přímo navazuje na sousedící Morávkům pavilon. Technické zázemí a garážová stání se skrývají pod platformou se zelenou střechou, která naplňuje meziprostor mezi hmotami „těžiště“ a „hradby“ a zpříjemňuje tak atmosféru stavby.

Úkolem centra je vyzvat obyvatele města k preventivní prohlídce, aby však k návštěvě centra došlo, musí mezi pacienty a budovou panovat vztah zproštěný strachu a plný důvěry - Centrum prevence zkrátka nesmí lhát. Místo toho, aby byla hierarchie prostor skryta za nečitelnou fasádou, musí pronikat na povrch. Tento princip se jedná zejména části komerčního provozu, kdy se do siluety hmoty propisují nejen vertikální komunikace a světlíky, ale také nosná konstrukce stavby.

Podoba „těžiště“ a „hradby“ navazuje na plochý a uzemněný charakter obou částí, které přenášejí zatížení z vykonzolovaného „přemostění“. Fasádám tedy dominuje rytmus balkónů a překladů, která mají, i přesto, že jsou obě části plné prosklených otvorů, zdůraznit tíhu hmot a nastolit tak v kompozici všech částí Centra prevence rovnováhu.
